Key facts by unit

Unit 1: Le temps: Future Perfect, Past Infinitive and the Passé Simple

The Futur Antérieur

  • Futur antérieur = futur of avoir or être + past participle: j'aurai fini, je serai parti(e), je me serai levé(e).
  • The auxiliary choice and all participle agreement follow the passé composé rules: elles seront parties; les lettres que j'aurai écrites.
  • Meaning: will have done, an action complete before a future point, often with d'ici, avant, à la fin de, dans + duration.
  • It also names the earlier of two future actions after quand, dès que, aussitôt que: Quand j'aurai fini, je pourrai partir.
  • J'aurai fini (will have) is not j'aurais fini (would have): check with nous aurons / nous aurions.

Quand, dès que, aussitôt que: the Future after Time Conjunctions

  • After quand, lorsque, dès que, aussitôt que, une fois que, après que, pendant que, tant que about the future, French uses a future tense where English uses a present.
  • Use the futur antérieur for the action that will be finished first: Quand j'aurai fini, je partirai (English: when I have finished).
  • The main clause is usually the futur simple or the impératif: Quand tu auras lu l'article, rends-le-moi.
  • Si meaning if, with a result in the future, takes the présent, never the futur: Si tu finis tôt, on ira au cinéma. (Si meaning whether can take the futur.)
  • For habits, quand takes the présent (and the passé composé for the earlier action): Quand il neige, je prends l'autobus.

The Infinitif Passé

  • Infinitif passé = avoir or être (infinitive) + past participle: avoir fini, être parti(e), s'être levé(e).
  • It names an action finished before the main verb: Merci de m'avoir aidé (the help is over) vs Merci de m'aider.
  • Après + infinitif passé needs the same subject as the main clause; otherwise use après que + indicatif.
  • Negation usually goes together before the auxiliary: de ne pas avoir répondu, de ne jamais avoir raté (n'avoir pas répondu is more formal).
  • Pronouns go before avoir / être; participle agreement follows the passé composé rules: après s'être levée, merci de m'avoir invitée.

Recognizing the Passé Simple

  • The passé simple is the literary equivalent of the passé composé: completed events in novels, tales, history and formal biography. Recognise it; use the passé composé in your own speech.
  • Four patterns, read from the il / ils forms: a (il parla, ils parlèrent), i (il finit, ils finirent), u (il fut, ils furent), in (il vint, ils vinrent).
  • Key irregulars: fut, eut, fit, vint, prit, mit, dit, vit, put, sut, naquit, mourut, vécut.
  • It pairs with the imparfait for background, just as the passé composé does; when you retell, only the passé simple changes.
  • Look-alikes: il finit, il dit (also présent), il vit (voir, or vivre in the présent), il fut (être, not a futur).

Full Past Narration: News, Biography and Story

  • Passé composé = events that move the story forward; imparfait = background, ongoing actions, description, habits; plus-que-parfait = what had already happened before the reference point.
  • Find the story's reference point and measure every verb against it: before → plus-que-parfait, around → imparfait, at or next → passé composé.
  • Depuis + présent = still true now (Il est ouvert depuis le 1er septembre); depuis + imparfait = still going on at a past moment (Elle attendait depuis une heure quand…).
  • From a past reference point, use la veille, le lendemain, ce jour-là, plus tôt instead of hier, demain, aujourd'hui, avant.
  • In published texts the passé simple replaces the passé composé for events; in your own writing, use the passé composé and don't switch between the two.
Unit 2: Le mode: Subjonctif, Conditionnel and Hypotheses

Opinion Verbs: Indicatif or Subjonctif?

  • Affirmative penser, croire, trouver, être sûr / certain, il me semble que + indicatif: the speaker asserts the clause.
  • In the negative these take the subjonctif in careful French: Je ne crois pas qu'elle ait raison.
  • Questions: est-ce que, intonation and negative questions usually keep the indicatif; an inverted question allows the subjonctif (Crois-tu que ce soit vrai ?) or the indicatif.
  • Affirmative espérer que + indicatif (often futur); souhaiter que + subjonctif. Negative or questioned espérer allows either mood.
  • Il me semble que, il paraît que, peut-être que, il est probable que + indicatif; il semble que usually + subjonctif; il est possible que, il se peut que + subjonctif.
  • There is no future subjonctif: the subjonctif présent also covers future time (Je ne pense pas qu'il pleuve demain).

Emotion, Wishes and Judgment

  • Emotion, wish or judgment + que + a different subject → subjonctif, even when the event is true: Je suis content que tu sois là.
  • Wider triggers: tenir à ce que, s'attendre à ce que, s'opposer à ce que, il est temps que, il vaut mieux que, ça m'étonnerait que.
  • Same subject → infinitive: de after emotions and il est + adjective (ravi de venir), no preposition after vouloir, aimer, préférer, souhaiter, il vaut mieux, à after tenir à, s'attendre à.
  • Polite conditionnel + subjonctif présent: J'aimerais que tu viennes (not viendrais).
  • Avoir peur que, craindre que: optional ne explétif (qu'il ne soit trop tard), which is not a negation.
  • Parce que + indicatif even after an emotion: Je suis contente parce que tu es là.

The Subjonctif Passé

  • Subjonctif passé = subjonctif of avoir or être + past participle: que j'aie fini, que je sois parti(e), que je me sois levé(e).
  • Measure from the main verb: same time or later → présent; earlier → passé. Je suis content qu'il vienne / qu'il soit venu.
  • The same two forms work after a past main verb: J'étais content qu'il vienne / qu'il soit venu.
  • Done before a future deadline → passé: Il faut que tu aies fini avant 17 h.
  • Avant que and jusqu'à ce que usually take the présent; bien que takes either by time; après que takes the indicatif in standard French.
  • Auxiliary choice, agreement, pronoun placement and negation work exactly as in the passé composé.

Concession, Purpose and Condition

  • Bien que has no infinitive partner: use bien que + adjective (bien que fatiguée) or malgré + noun. Jusqu'à ce que keeps the subjonctif (jusqu'à + infinitive means to the point of).
  • Optional ne explétif after avant que, à moins que, de peur que, de crainte que: it is not a negation.
  • De sorte que: purpose → subjonctif, result → indicatif. Quoique = although; quoi que = whatever.

Advanced Hypotheses and Tactful Feedback

  • Real: si + présent → présent, futur or impératif. Unreal now: si + imparfait → conditionnel présent. Unreal past: si + plus-que-parfait → conditionnel passé.
  • Mixed: si + plus-que-parfait → conditionnel présent (past condition, result now); si + imparfait → conditionnel passé (lasting condition, past result).
  • No futur or conditionnel right after si = if; même si, sauf si, si jamais follow the same tense rules.
  • Au cas où + conditionnel; à supposer que, en supposant que, en admettant que + subjonctif (supposons que usually too).
  • Et si on + imparfait = suggestion; si seulement + imparfait or plus-que-parfait = wish or regret.
  • Tactful feedback: J'aurais utilisé…, Tu aurais pu…, Il aurait été utile de…, Pourrais-tu…?, Ce serait plus clair si…
Unit 3: Pronouns, Negation and Agreement

Double Pronouns in Every Position

  • Order before the verb: me, te, se, nous, vous → le, la, les → lui, leur → y → en. The two pronouns form one block that never splits.
  • The block goes before the verb it belongs to: the conjugated verb, the auxiliary in compound tenses, the infinitive after pouvoir, vouloir, devoir, aller (je vais le leur dire), but before faire in faire + infinitive (je le lui fais lire).
  • Negation wraps the block and the conjugated verb or auxiliary: Je ne le lui ai pas donné.
  • Affirmative commands: verb + le/la/les → moi/toi/lui/nous/vous/leur → y → en, with hyphens; moi, toi become m', t' before en (Donne-m'en). Negative commands use statement order (Ne me le donne pas).
  • The past participle agrees with a direct object pronoun placed before it (Robert me l'a donnée), never with lui, leur or y, and normally not with en; fait + infinitive never agrees.
  • me, te, se, nous, vous (direct) cannot combine with lui, leur: Il m'a présenté à elle.

Lequel, auquel, duquel

  • Forms: lequel, laquelle, lesquels, lesquelles; with à: auquel, à laquelle, auxquels, auxquelles; with de: duquel, de laquelle, desquels, desquelles.
  • The French verb decides the preposition, even when English has none: assister à, participer à, faire face à, s'abonner à, s'attendre à, tenir à → la réunion à laquelle j'ai assisté.
  • People after a preposition: usually qui (à qui, avec qui); lequel is also correct but more formal, and needed after parmi (parmi lesquels). Things: lequel, not qui.
  • No noun to agree with (ce, quelque chose, rien, a whole idea): preposition + quoi: ce à quoi je m'attendais.
  • Question which one?: Lequel / Laquelle / Lesquels / Lesquelles (des…) ?, agreeing with the noun; Auquel… ? Duquel… ? merge too.

Dont, Duquel and Où

  • dont replaces de + noun when de belongs to a verb (se souvenir de), an adjective (fier de), an expression (avoir besoin de) or a noun (whose).
  • dont = whose: after dont use normal order, and the owned noun takes le, la, les: l'auteure dont j'ai lu le roman (never dont son roman).
  • In lists and statistics, dont = including: quinze blessés, dont trois graves.
  • de at the end of a compound preposition (près de, au sujet de, au bord de, à cause de): use duquel, de laquelle, desquels, desquelles, or de qui for people.
  • où = where and when; d'où = from where (le pays d'où elle vient); par où = through where.

Demonstrative and Possessive Pronouns

  • celui, celle, ceux, celles agree with the noun they replace and never stand alone: they usually take -ci / -là, de + noun, qui / que / dont / où, or a preposition + lequel (formal writing also allows a participle: ceux ayant terminé).
  • In writing, celui-ci = the latter (nearer), celui-là = the former; in speech celui-là often just means this one or that one.
  • ce goes with être and before qui, que, dont; ceci announces, cela refers back; ça is the conversational form (no accent).
  • Possessive pronouns agree with the thing owned: le mien, la mienne, les miens, les miennes … le leur, la leur, les leurs. Le sien = his, hers or its.
  • À and de merge with le and les: au mien, aux nôtres, du tien, des leurs; à la mienne, de la sienne stay separate.
  • Circumflex on the pronoun only: notre maison but la nôtre; votre chien but le vôtre.

Advanced Negation

  • Negatives pair ne with pas, rien, personne, jamais, plus, aucun(e), nulle part, que, ni… ni (and literary guère, point). Don't add pas to the others (ne… pas que, not only, is a separate pattern).
  • Compound tenses: pas, rien, jamais, plus, guère go between the auxiliary and the participle (Je n'ai rien vu); personne, nulle part, aucun + noun, que and ni… ni (negating objects) go after it (Je n'ai vu personne).
  • As subjects: Personne ne…, Rien ne…, Aucun(e)… ne…, Ni… ni… ne… with no pas.
  • Negative infinitive: ne pas, ne jamais, ne rien, ne plus before the infinitive (de ne pas fumer); personne, nulle part, aucun, que after it (de ne voir personne).
  • un, une, des, du, de la → de after a negation (Elle n'a plus d'argent), but not after être, in a contrast, or with ne… que.
  • Speech often drops ne (C'est pas grave); formal writing keeps it.

Tricky Agreement: Collective Nouns, Several Adjectives, Comparisons

  • la plupart des + plural noun, or la plupart alone → plural verb (with a singular noun, as in la plupart du temps, the verb is singular); after beaucoup de, peu de, trop de, combien de, the verb agrees with the noun that follows.
  • A collective noun alone (la foule, l'équipe, le public), le nombre de, tout le monde, chacun → singular verb.
  • un groupe de, une foule de, la majorité de, un grand nombre de, la moitié de + plural noun → singular (the block) or plural (the members); keep the whole sentence consistent.
  • Several adjectives: each in its usual place (une immense maison blanche); one adjective for a masculine and a feminine noun → masculine plural.
  • Superlative: le / la / les plus (moins) + adjective, repeating the article when the adjective follows the noun (la maison la moins chère du quartier); in = de; with an adverb, always le (le plus souvent).
  • bon → meilleur, bien → mieux, mauvais → pire (or plus mauvais); never plus bon or plus bien as comparatives.
Unit 4: Discours et argumentation: Reporting, Persuading and Style

Indirect Discourse: Every Shift

  • After a past reporting verb: présent → imparfait, passé composé → plus-que-parfait, futur → conditionnel, futur antérieur → conditionnel passé, impératif → de + infinitif.
  • Imparfait, plus-que-parfait, conditionnel (présent and passé) and subjonctif stay; only the verb that triggers a subjonctif shifts (il faut → il fallait que je parte).
  • Any past reporting verb triggers the shift: passé composé, imparfait, plus-que-parfait or passé simple. A reporting verb in the présent or futur keeps the original tenses; only people and possessives (and time words, if time has passed) change.
  • Time and place shift when the moment has changed: hier → la veille, demain → le lendemain, après-demain → le surlendemain, la semaine prochaine → la semaine suivante, ici → là.
  • A still-true fact may keep the présent (Elle a rappelé que le français est une langue officielle); the backshift is also correct.
  • After a direct quotation, invert the incise: « … », a déclaré la ministre / a-t-il ajouté.

Indirect Questions and Commands

  • Yes/no → si (s'il, s'ils); qu'est-ce que → ce que; qu'est-ce qui → ce qui; qui est-ce qui / que → qui; où, quand, comment, pourquoi, combien, quel, lequel, preposition + quoi stay.
  • Indirect questions use statement order, no est-ce que, and end with a period unless the main clause is a question (Savez-vous où il est ?).
  • A noun subject may follow the verb after où, quand, comment, quel, ce que (Dites-moi où habite votre sœur), but not after si.
  • Commands: dire / demander / conseiller / interdire à qqn de + inf (lui, leur); prier / supplier / empêcher qqn de + inf (le, la); encourager / inviter / aider qqn à + inf (le, la).
  • Demander à quelqu'un de faire = ask someone to do; demander à faire = ask permission to do it yourself.

Faire Causatif, se faire and se laisser

  • faire + infinitive = have something done or make someone do something; no noun comes between faire and the infinitive: the nouns come after it.
  • With two objects, the thing is direct and the doer takes à (fait laver la vaisselle aux enfants); use par to avoid ambiguity or for someone doing a job (par un mécanicien).
  • Object pronouns go before faire, not before the second infinitive: Elle la leur fait laver. Je vais le faire réparer. Fais-les entrer ! (Only a kept reflexive se stays with its infinitive: Je l'ai fait s'asseoir.)
  • fait + infinitive never agrees: les joueurs qu'elle a fait courir, elle s'est fait couper les cheveux; laissé + infinitive may agree or not (1990 reform).
  • se faire + inf = have something done to yourself or have something happen to you; se laisser + inf = let yourself (be)…
  • make + adjective = rendre: Ça me rend heureux.

Building an Argument: Thesis, Concession and Connectors

  • Structure: introduction (sujet amené, posé, divisé) → one argument per paragraph (claim + evidence + explanation) → concession and refutation → conclusion (summary + opening).
  • Concession formulas: Certes…, toutefois… · Il est vrai que…, mais… · Vous m'objecterez peut-être que…, mais… · On prétend parfois que…, mais…
  • Bien que + subjonctif, même si + indicatif, malgré + noun.
  • En effet = indeed / that is because (never in effect); actuellement = currently; éventuellement = possibly.
  • Conclusions and findings in past tenses; recommendations in the futur, the conditionnel, or recommander que + subjonctif.

Figures of Speech and Literary Analysis

  • Comparaison has a comparison word (comme, tel, aussi… que); métaphore has none; personnification gives human traits to a thing or idea.
  • Hyperbole exaggerates; litote says less to mean more (« Va, je ne te hais point », Corneille, Le Cid); euphémisme softens.
  • Antithèse sets opposites side by side; oxymore fuses them in one expression (obscure clarté); gradation builds in intensity.
  • Allitération repeats consonant sounds (Racine's serpents qui sifflent); assonance repeats vowel sounds; anaphore repeats words at the start of lines.
  • Analysis = repérer, citer, interpréter: name the figure, quote it, explain its effect.
  • A French sonnet has 14 lines (two quatrains + two tercets); an alexandrin has 12 syllables.
Unit 5: Langue et société: Registers, Media and Literature

Registers: Familier, Courant, Soutenu

  • Register shows in vocabulary (bagnole, voiture, automobile) and in grammar: dropped ne, on for nous, question form, ça or cela, y'a or il y a.
  • Questions climb the scale: Tu viens? → Est-ce que tu viens? → Venez-vous? Familiar Québec speech adds the particle -tu: Tu viens-tu?
  • Dropping ne is normal in conversation; keep ne in writing unless you are reproducing speech.
  • The ne explétif (avant qu'il ne parte, je crains qu'il ne pleuve) is optional, formal, and not a negation.
  • Formal greetings agree: enchanté(e), soyez le bienvenu / la bienvenue / les bienvenus.
  • Choose one register for the audience and hold it to the end; mixing registers is the commonest error.

Spoken French, Slang and Idioms

  • Liaison carries a silent final consonant onto the next vowel: s, x → z, d → t, f → v (mainly in neuf‿ans, neuf‿heures).
  • Obligatory: determiner + noun, pronoun + verb, adjective + noun. Forbidden: after et, after a singular noun, before an aspirated h (les / héros).
  • Spoken contractions: t'es (tu es), chuis (je suis), p'tit (petit), y'a (il y a), faut (il faut), z'êtes (vous êtes).
  • Verlan swaps syllables (France): meuf (femme), relou (lourd), chelou (louche), laisse béton (laisse tomber).
  • Québec familiar: char, blonde, chum, jaser, niaiser, pantoute, c'est le fun. Avoid calques such as appliquer sur un poste in formal writing: say postuler à un poste.
  • Chercher des poux à quelqu'un (not puces) = to pick a fight over nothing.

Media, Bias and Point of View

  • Parts of a news page: la une (front page), surtitre, titre, chapeau (lede paragraph), attaque (first sentence), intertitre, légende (caption).
  • Journalistic conditionnel = unconfirmed: present for now or later (il songerait à…), conditionnel passé for the past (il aurait démissionné).
  • Attribution verbs carry judgment: dire, déclarer (neutral), affirmer (confident), prétendre (doubt), reconnaître, admettre (concession).
  • Read for what is missing: who is quoted, what numbers are compared to, which photo was chosen, what the headline leaves out.
  • les Autochtones (noun, capital) / autochtone (adjective, lower case); Premières Nations excludes Inuit and Métis; use a nation's own name when you know it.
