Unit 2 · Lesson 3 of 5

The Subjonctif Passé

Form the subjonctif passé (subjonctif of avoir or être plus a past participle), choose between présent and passé by measuring time from the main verb, use it for actions finished before a future deadline, and handle agreement, pronouns, negation and the conjunctions that usually keep the présent.

Key things to remember

  1. 1Subjonctif passé = subjonctif of avoir or être + past participle: que j'aie fini, que je sois parti(e), que je me sois levé(e).
  2. 2Measure from the main verb: same time or later → présent; earlier → passé. Je suis content qu'il vienne / qu'il soit venu.
  3. 3The same two forms work after a past main verb: J'étais content qu'il vienne / qu'il soit venu.
  4. 4Done before a future deadline → passé: Il faut que tu aies fini avant 17 h.
  5. 5Avant que and jusqu'à ce que usually take the présent; bien que takes either by time; après que takes the indicatif in standard French.
  6. 6Auxiliary choice, agreement, pronoun placement and negation work exactly as in the passé composé.

The subjonctif présent cannot tell you that something has already happened. Je suis content que tu viennes means I'm glad you're coming: the coming is now or ahead. But what if your friend came yesterday, or passed an exam last week, or might have made a mistake? You need the subjonctif passé: Je suis content que tu sois venu (I'm glad you came), Je suis fière que tu aies réussi (I'm proud you passed), Il est possible qu'elle se soit trompée (she may have made a mistake). If you can form the passé composé, you can form it: same auxiliary, same participle, same agreement. The only change is that the auxiliary goes into the subjonctif. The real skill is deciding which subjonctif, and that is a question of time.

The auxiliary is the irregular subjonctif of avoir (aie, aies, ait, ayons, ayez, aient) or être (sois, sois, soit, soyons, soyez, soient). No i after the y: ayons and soyons, never ayions or soyions.
Formation in one line
Subjonctif of avoir or être + past participle. Choose the auxiliary exactly as for the passé composé (être for the short list of movement and change-of-state verbs such as aller, venir, partir, naître, mourir, and for all pronominal verbs; avoir for the rest) and apply the same agreement: with être, the participle agrees with the subject; with avoir, only with a direct object placed before the verb.

Présent or passé? Measure from the main verb

Fig 1Three timelines. The main verb sets the reference point; an action earlier than that point takes the subjonctif passé, an action at the same time or later takes the subjonctif présent. The third timeline shows the passé for an action finished before a future deadline.
ASubjonctif présent: same time or later
  • Je suis content que tu viennes. — I'm glad you're coming.
  • Je doute qu'il comprenne. — I doubt he understands.
  • Il est possible qu'elle parte demain. — She may leave tomorrow.
  • Je regrette que vous ne puissiez pas venir. — I'm sorry you can't come.
BSubjonctif passé: earlier, already done
  • Je suis content que tu sois venu. — I'm glad you came.
  • Je doute qu'il ait compris. — I doubt he understood.
  • Il est possible qu'elle soit déjà partie. — She may already have left.
  • Je regrette que vous n'ayez pas pu venir. — I'm sorry you weren't able to come.
A past main verb changes nothing in the method
Measure from the main verb, wherever it sits in time. J'étais content qu'il vienne = I was glad he was coming (at that time or afterwards). J'étais content qu'il soit venu = I was glad he had come (before that). Everyday modern French uses only these two forms of the subjonctif after any main tense (the literary forms are at the end of this lesson), so you never need to backshift the way you do with the indicatif in reported speech.
Finished before a future deadline
Like the futur antérieur, the subjonctif passé can describe an action that will be finished by a point in the future: Il faut que tu aies fini avant 17 h (You have to have finished by 5 p.m.). J'aimerais que vous ayez lu le chapitre 3 avant la prochaine rencontre (I'd like you to have read chapter 3 before the next meeting). Il faut que tu finisses avant 17 h is also correct; the passé simply stresses that the task must be complete by then.

With conjunctions

ConjunctionUsual choiceExampleEnglish
bien que, quoiqueprésent or passé, by timeBien qu'il ait plu toute la journée, le match a eu lieu.Although it rained all day, the game took place.
avant queusually présent (the event has not happened yet)Rentrons avant qu'il (ne) fasse nuit.Let's go home before it gets dark.
jusqu'à ce queusually présentAttends ici jusqu'à ce que je revienne.Wait here until I come back.
pour que, à condition queusually présent; passé for a result that must be completeTu pourras sortir à condition que tu aies fini tes devoirs. You can go out provided you've finished your homework.
après que (standard French)indicatif, not subjonctifOn mangera après que tout le monde sera arrivé.We'll eat after everyone has arrived.
Avant que points to something still ahead, so the présent is the natural choice; the passé after avant que is possible but rare, for an action that will be complete before another.
Après que: a subjonctif you will hear but should not write
Après que tout le monde soit arrivé is extremely common in speech, in the media and even in print, by analogy with avant que. Careful written French still expects the indicatif, because after introduces something that has really happened: après que tout le monde est arrivé (or sera arrivé for the future). The easiest escape is to rephrase: une fois que tout le monde est arrivé, or, with the same subject, après + infinitif passé: Après être arrivés, nous avons mangé.

Pronouns, negation and agreement

  • Negation goes around the auxiliary: Je regrette que tu n'aies pas pu venir. — I'm sorry you weren't able to come.
  • Object pronouns go before the auxiliary: Je suis content que tu les aies trouvées. — I'm glad you found them (les = tes clés, so trouvées agrees with the feminine plural object placed before the verb).
  • Être verbs agree with the subject: Je doute qu'elles soient arrivées à l'heure. — I doubt they arrived on time.
  • Pronominal verbs take être: Il est possible qu'elle se soit trompée. — She may have made a mistake.
  • Opinion flips work in the past too: Je suis certain qu'il a vérifié vos progrès → Je ne suis pas certain qu'il ait vérifié vos progrès. — I'm not certain he checked your progress.
ADifferent subjects: que + subjonctif passé
  • Je suis fier que tu aies réussi. — I'm proud you succeeded.
  • Elle regrette que nous ne soyons pas venus. — She's sorry we didn't come.
  • Je suis désolée que tu aies dû attendre. — I'm sorry you had to wait.
BSame subject: infinitif passé
  • Je suis fier d'avoir réussi. — I'm proud to have succeeded.
  • Elle regrette de ne pas être venue. — She's sorry she didn't come.
  • Merci d'avoir pris le temps de me répondre. — Thank you for taking the time to answer me.
For reading only: the subjonctif of classic literature
Older novels and very formal texts use two more forms, mostly in the third person singular. The imparfait du subjonctif (qu'il fût, qu'il eût, qu'il fît, qu'il vînt, qu'il parlât) reads like a subjonctif présent: Il fallait qu'il partît = Il fallait qu'il parte. The plus-que-parfait du subjonctif (qu'il eût fini, qu'elle fût partie) reads like a subjonctif passé. You may also see eût + participle in place of the conditionnel passé: il eût aimé = il aurait aimé. Recognise these forms; you do not need to produce them.

Worked examples

Reveal one step at a time and try to beat it to the next line.

Example 1
Translate: I'm glad you passed the exam. (to a friend)
Example 2
Rewrite in the negative: Je suis certain qu'il a vérifié vos progrès. (I'm certain he checked your progress.)
Example 3
Translate: She may have gotten lost.
Example 4
Translate both: (a) Although it rained all day, the game took place. (b) Let's leave before it rains.

Where marks get lost

  • Leaving the auxiliary in the indicatif: Je suis content que tu as réussi. Correct: Je suis content que tu aies réussi.
  • Misspelling the auxiliary: que tu aie, qu'il aie, que nous ayions. Correct: que tu aies, qu'il ait, que nous ayons.
  • Using the présent for an earlier event: Je suis désolé que tu tombes hier. Correct: Je suis désolé que tu sois tombé(e) hier.
  • Choosing avoir for an être verb: Je doute qu'elle ait partie. Correct: Je doute qu'elle soit partie.
  • Writing the subjonctif after après que in a formal text: On mangera après que tout le monde soit arrivé. Correct: après que tout le monde sera arrivé (or une fois que tout le monde sera arrivé).
