Le temps: Future Perfect, Past Infinitive and the Passé Simple: Test Review

Everything for the Unit 1 test on one page: the key facts from all 5 lessons, the mistakes that cost the most marks, and a practice test that points you back to the lessons you need.

Key facts

The Futur Antérieur

  • Futur antérieur = futur of avoir or être + past participle: j'aurai fini, je serai parti(e), je me serai levé(e).
  • The auxiliary choice and all participle agreement follow the passé composé rules: elles seront parties; les lettres que j'aurai écrites.
  • Meaning: will have done, an action complete before a future point, often with d'ici, avant, à la fin de, dans + duration.
  • It also names the earlier of two future actions after quand, dès que, aussitôt que: Quand j'aurai fini, je pourrai partir.
  • J'aurai fini (will have) is not j'aurais fini (would have): check with nous aurons / nous aurions.

Quand, dès que, aussitôt que: the Future after Time Conjunctions

  • After quand, lorsque, dès que, aussitôt que, une fois que, après que, pendant que, tant que about the future, French uses a future tense where English uses a present.
  • Use the futur antérieur for the action that will be finished first: Quand j'aurai fini, je partirai (English: when I have finished).
  • The main clause is usually the futur simple or the impératif: Quand tu auras lu l'article, rends-le-moi.
  • Si meaning if, with a result in the future, takes the présent, never the futur: Si tu finis tôt, on ira au cinéma. (Si meaning whether can take the futur.)
  • For habits, quand takes the présent (and the passé composé for the earlier action): Quand il neige, je prends l'autobus.

The Infinitif Passé

  • Infinitif passé = avoir or être (infinitive) + past participle: avoir fini, être parti(e), s'être levé(e).
  • It names an action finished before the main verb: Merci de m'avoir aidé (the help is over) vs Merci de m'aider.
  • Après + infinitif passé needs the same subject as the main clause; otherwise use après que + indicatif.
  • Negation usually goes together before the auxiliary: de ne pas avoir répondu, de ne jamais avoir raté (n'avoir pas répondu is more formal).
  • Pronouns go before avoir / être; participle agreement follows the passé composé rules: après s'être levée, merci de m'avoir invitée.

Recognizing the Passé Simple

  • The passé simple is the literary equivalent of the passé composé: completed events in novels, tales, history and formal biography. Recognise it; use the passé composé in your own speech.
  • Four patterns, read from the il / ils forms: a (il parla, ils parlèrent), i (il finit, ils finirent), u (il fut, ils furent), in (il vint, ils vinrent).
  • Key irregulars: fut, eut, fit, vint, prit, mit, dit, vit, put, sut, naquit, mourut, vécut.
  • It pairs with the imparfait for background, just as the passé composé does; when you retell, only the passé simple changes.
  • Look-alikes: il finit, il dit (also présent), il vit (voir, or vivre in the présent), il fut (être, not a futur).

Full Past Narration: News, Biography and Story

  • Passé composé = events that move the story forward; imparfait = background, ongoing actions, description, habits; plus-que-parfait = what had already happened before the reference point.
  • Find the story's reference point and measure every verb against it: before → plus-que-parfait, around → imparfait, at or next → passé composé.
  • Depuis + présent = still true now (Il est ouvert depuis le 1er septembre); depuis + imparfait = still going on at a past moment (Elle attendait depuis une heure quand…).
  • From a past reference point, use la veille, le lendemain, ce jour-là, plus tôt instead of hier, demain, aujourd'hui, avant.
  • In published texts the passé simple replaces the passé composé for events; in your own writing, use the passé composé and don't switch between the two.

Where marks get lost

  • Choosing the wrong auxiliary: j'aurai parti, elle aura arrivée. Verbs that take être in the passé composé take it here too: je serai parti(e), elle sera arrivée. (The Futur Antérieur)
  • Dropping agreement with être: Mes amies seront parti. The participle agrees with the subject: seront parties. (The Futur Antérieur)
  • Writing the conditionnel by accident: D'ici juin, j'aurais fini means I would have finished by June (under some condition). For a plain future deadline: j'aurai fini. (The Futur Antérieur)
  • Translating by Friday as par vendredi. Use d'ici vendredi or avant vendredi. (The Futur Antérieur)
  • Putting the object pronoun after the auxiliary: J'aurai le fini. Pronouns go before the auxiliary: Je l'aurai fini. (The Futur Antérieur)
  • Copying the English present after when: Quand j'arrive à Ottawa demain, je t'appellerai. Write Quand j'arriverai à Ottawa demain… (Quand, dès que, aussitôt que: the Future after Time Conjunctions)
  • Copying the English present perfect: Dès que j'ai fini, je partirai. The finished future action needs the futur antérieur: Dès que j'aurai fini, je partirai. (Quand, dès que, aussitôt que: the Future after Time Conjunctions)
  • Carrying the rule over to si: Si j'aurai le temps, je viendrai. After si meaning if, use the présent: Si j'ai le temps, je viendrai. (Quand, dès que, aussitôt que: the Future after Time Conjunctions)
  • Writing the conditionnel instead of the futur: Quand j'aurais fini… (would have). For a real future plan, quand j'aurai fini has no s. (Quand, dès que, aussitôt que: the Future after Time Conjunctions)
  • Using the futur for a habit: Quand il neigera, je prends l'autobus. For a routine, both verbs are in the présent: Quand il neige, je prends l'autobus. (Quand, dès que, aussitôt que: the Future after Time Conjunctions)
  • Using a present infinitive or an -ant form after après: après finir, après finissant. Write après avoir fini. (The Infinitif Passé)
  • Thanking for finished help with the present infinitive: Merci de m'aider hier. The help is over: Merci de m'avoir aidé(e) hier. (The Infinitif Passé)
  • Choosing avoir for an être verb: après avoir arrivé. Use the passé composé auxiliary: après être arrivé(e). (The Infinitif Passé)
  • Forgetting to change the reflexive pronoun: Après se être levés, nous… The reflexive pronoun matches the subject: Après nous être levés, nous… (s'être goes with il, elle, on, ils, elles, and se elides before être). (The Infinitif Passé)
  • Letting the subjects drift apart: Après avoir fini le match, le bus nous a ramenés. The bus did not play. Write Après avoir fini le match, nous sommes rentrés en bus. (The Infinitif Passé)
  • Reading il fut as a future. Fut is the passé simple of être: he was. The future is il sera. (Recognizing the Passé Simple)
  • Treating -èrent as a present ending: ils arrivèrent is they arrived, not they arrive (ils arrivent). (Recognizing the Passé Simple)
  • Retelling with the wrong auxiliary: elle naquit becomes elle a né. Naître takes être: elle est née. The same goes for vint (est venu), mourut (est mort), partit (est parti). (Recognizing the Passé Simple)
  • Changing the imparfait when retelling: La neige tombait stays tombait. Only the passé simple becomes a passé composé. (Recognizing the Passé Simple)
  • Using the passé simple in your own conversation or mixing it with the passé composé in one story. In speech and in most of your writing, narrate with the passé composé and the imparfait. (Recognizing the Passé Simple)
  • Putting a sudden single event in the imparfait: Soudain, le téléphone sonnait. A sudden event that moves the story forward is a passé composé: Soudain, le téléphone a sonné. (Full Past Narration: News, Biography and Story)
  • Using the passé composé for something that happened before the reference point: Quand la police est arrivée, les voleurs sont partis means they left when the police came. For had already left: étaient déjà partis. (Full Past Narration: News, Biography and Story)
  • Using the passé composé with depuis for a situation that is still going on: J'ai habité ici depuis 2015. Write J'habite ici depuis 2015. (Full Past Narration: News, Biography and Story)
  • Translating had been waiting with the plus-que-parfait: J'avais attendu depuis une heure quand… With depuis, use the imparfait: J'attendais depuis une heure quand… (Full Past Narration: News, Biography and Story)
  • Keeping hier and demain in a story set in the past: Ce jour-là, elle a dit qu'elle partirait demain. From a past reference point: le lendemain. (Full Past Narration: News, Biography and Story)
