Unit 1 · 4 lessons

Linear Systems

Find the point where two lines meet: solve systems of two linear equations by graphing, substitution and elimination, tell when a system has one, no or infinitely many solutions, and use systems to solve real problems about money, mixtures and rates.

  1. 1Solving Linear Systems by Graphing
  2. 2Solving by Substitution
  3. 3Solving by Elimination
  4. 4Problems Using Linear Systems
Unit 2 · 4 lessons

Analytic Geometry

Use coordinates to measure and prove: find the midpoint and length of a line segment, write the equation of a circle centred at the origin, build perpendicular bisectors, find the shortest distance from a point to a line, and verify properties of triangles and quadrilaterals with algebra.

  1. 1Midpoint and Length of a Line Segment
  2. 2Equation of a Circle
  3. 3Slopes, Perpendicular Bisectors and Distance to a Line
  4. 4Verifying Properties of Triangles and Quadrilaterals
Unit 3 · 4 lessons

Quadratic Expressions

Multiply binomials and simplify second-degree expressions, then run the process backwards: factor out common factors, group, factor trinomials, and spot perfect squares and differences of squares.

  1. 1Expanding and Simplifying
  2. 2Common Factors and Grouping
  3. 3Factoring Trinomials
  4. 4Perfect Squares and Difference of Squares

Quadratic Relations

Meet the parabola: recognize quadratic relations from data, tables and equations, read the vertex, axis, zeros and maximum or minimum, graph y = a(x − h)² + k by transforming y = x², use factored form and completing the square, and compare y = x² with y = 2ˣ to make sense of zero and negative exponents.

  1. 1Quadratic Relations and Their Properties
  2. 2Transformations and Vertex Form
  3. 3Factored Form and Zeros
  4. 4Completing the Square
  5. 5Comparing y = x squared and y = 2 to the x
Unit 5 · 4 lessons

Quadratic Equations

Solve quadratic equations by factoring, with the quadratic formula and by graphing, use the discriminant to tell whether there are two, one or no real roots, and answer real questions about heights, times, areas and revenue.

  1. 1Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring
  2. 2The Quadratic Formula
  3. 3Real and Non-Real Roots
  4. 4Solving Problems with Quadratics

Use ratio and proportion to work with similar triangles (shadows, mirrors, scale models, surveying), then build the sine, cosine and tangent ratios from similar right triangles and use them with the Pythagorean theorem to find unknown sides and angles in real situations.

  1. 1Similar Triangles
  2. 2The Primary Trigonometric Ratios
  3. 3Solving Right-Triangle Problems

Follow where the sine law and the cosine law come from, use them to find missing sides and angles in triangles with no right angle, and choose the right tool to solve real measurement problems.

  1. 1The Sine Law
  2. 2The Cosine Law
  3. 3Choosing a Method and Solving Problems
