Le subjonctif: Wishes, Feelings and Doubts: Test Review
Everything for the Unit 1 test on one page: the key facts from all 5 lessons, the mistakes that cost the most marks, and a practice test that points you back to the lessons you need.
Key facts
Forming the Subjonctif Présent
- Regular subjonctif: ils form of the présent minus -ent, plus -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent: ils choisissent → que je choisisse.
- nous and vous take their stem from the nous form of the présent, so for most verbs they match the imparfait: que nous prenions, que vous buviez.
- Two-stem verbs: prenne/prenions, vienne/venions, boive/buvions, reçoive/recevions, doive/devions, croie/croyions, voie/voyions.
- Irregular: être (sois, soit, soyons), avoir (aie, ait, ayons), faire (fasse), pouvoir (puisse), savoir (sache), aller (aille, allions), vouloir (veuille, voulions), falloir (qu'il faille), pleuvoir (qu'il pleuve).
- No i after the y of avoir and être: que nous ayons, que vous soyez; but two-stem y verbs add it: que nous voyions, croyions.
Will, Necessity and Emotion
- Espérer que in the affirmative takes the indicatif: J'espère que tu viendras.
- Ne explétif after avoir peur que, craindre que is optional, formal and not a negation: J'ai peur qu'il ne pleuve = I'm afraid it will rain.
- Il ne faut pas que tu partes = you must not leave; tu n'es pas obligé de partir = you don't have to leave.
Doubt versus Certainty
- The indicatif shows that a speaker presents a claim as true, not that it is true: check the evidence.
Conjunctions That Demand the Subjonctif
- Après que takes the indicatif in standard French, even though many speakers use the subjonctif.
Subjonctif or Infinitive?
- Same subject → infinitive: Je veux partir.
- Bien que, quoique, jusqu'à ce que, pourvu que have no infinitive partner: the subjonctif stays even with the same subject.
- Emotion adjectives and il est + adjective take de before the infinitive; vouloir, préférer, souhaiter take no preposition.
