Raconter: Sequencing Events in the Past: Test Review

Everything for the Unit 2 test on one page: the key facts from all 5 lessons, the mistakes that cost the most marks, and a practice test that points you back to the lessons you need.

Key facts

Passé Composé and Imparfait in a Narrative

  • Imparfait = the scene: setting, description, feelings, actions in progress, habits.
  • Passé composé = the plot: completed events, chains of events, a counted number of times, a closed time span.
  • The test: if the verb answers what happened next?, use the passé composé; if it answers what was the situation?, use the imparfait.
  • Length does not decide the tense: Il a plu pendant trois jours is long but closed, so it is passé composé.
  • Meaning changes: je savais (knew) / j'ai su (found out); je connaissais (knew) / j'ai connu (met); je pouvais (could) / j'ai pu (managed to).

The Plus-que-parfait and the Order of Events

  • Plus-que-parfait = imparfait of avoir or être + past participle: j'avais fini, elle était partie, nous nous étions levés.
  • Same auxiliary and same agreement rules as the passé composé.
  • Use it for a past action that happened before another past action, especially when you mention it second.
  • English often hides the had: the film you told me about → le film dont tu m'avais parlé.
  • Short adverbs (déjà, jamais, pas encore) go between the auxiliary and the participle; ne and object pronouns go before the auxiliary.

Reporting What Someone Said

  • Reporting verb in the présent (il dit, la radio annonce): keep the original tenses; change only people and possessives.
  • Reporting verb in the past: présent → imparfait, passé composé → plus-que-parfait, futur → conditionnel; imparfait, plus-que-parfait and conditionnel stay.
  • Pronouns and possessives follow the reporter: je → il / elle, mon → son; tu said to you → je.
  • Time words shift when time has passed: aujourd'hui → ce jour-là, hier → la veille, demain → le lendemain.
  • Questions: yes/no → si; qu'est-ce que → ce que; qu'est-ce qui → ce qui; other question words stay; statement word order. Commands → de + infinitive.

Time Expressions: depuis, pendant, il y a, dans

  • Still going now: présent + depuis (= ça fait / il y a / voilà… que + présent). J'habite ici depuis deux ans.
  • Still going at a past moment: imparfait + depuis. J'attendais depuis une heure quand il est arrivé.
  • pendant = a closed span (any tense; passé composé in a past story). pour = an intended span with partir, aller, venir.
  • il y a + duration = ago (past tense); dans + duration = in, from now (future); en + duration = the time it takes.
  • jusqu'à ce que and avant que take the subjonctif; quand, dès que, pendant que, chaque fois que, depuis que take the indicatif, and so does après que in standard French.

Structuring a Story or Report

  • The five stages: situation initiale (imparfait) → élément déclencheur (passé composé) → péripéties → dénouement → situation finale (imparfait or présent).
  • Step connectors for a passé composé chain: d'abord → puis / ensuite → alors → enfin.
  • autrefois (formerly) + imparfait; dernièrement (lately) + passé composé or présent; dorénavant (from now on) + présent or futur.
  • False friends: actuellement = currently; éventuellement = possibly; actually = en fait.
  • A news report starts with the main event (passé composé), then circumstances (imparfait), earlier causes (plus-que-parfait) and next steps (futur).

Where marks get lost

  • Using the imparfait for anything long: Il pleuvait pendant trois jours for a finished period. A closed span takes the passé composé: Il a plu pendant trois jours. (Passé Composé and Imparfait in a Narrative)
  • Writing J'étais né en 2009 for I was born in 2009. Birth is a one-time event: Je suis né(e) en 2009. (J'étais né means I had been born.) (Passé Composé and Imparfait in a Narrative)
  • Using je savais for I found out: Hier, je savais la nouvelle. The moment of learning is the passé composé: Hier, j'ai su la nouvelle (or j'ai appris la nouvelle). (Passé Composé and Imparfait in a Narrative)
  • Translating was …ing word for word: J'étais marchant. French has no such form; use the imparfait je marchais or j'étais en train de marcher. (Passé Composé and Imparfait in a Narrative)
  • Putting every verb of a story in the passé composé, so there is no scene at all: Il a fait froid, j'ai été fatigué et j'ai regardé la télé quand il est arrivé. Description and background belong in the imparfait: Il faisait froid, j'étais fatigué et je regardais la télé quand il est arrivé. (Passé Composé and Imparfait in a Narrative)
  • Using avoir with an être verb: J'avais allé au parc. The auxiliary is the same as in the passé composé: J'étais allé(e) au parc. (The Plus-que-parfait and the Order of Events)
  • Using the passé composé for the earlier event when it is told second: Quand je suis arrivé, le film a déjà commencé. The film started first: le film avait déjà commencé. (The Plus-que-parfait and the Order of Events)
  • Putting déjà at the end: J'avais fini déjà. Short adverbs go between the auxiliary and the participle: J'avais déjà fini. (The Plus-que-parfait and the Order of Events)
  • Forgetting agreement: Elle était parti → Elle était partie; les lettres qu'il avait écrit → les lettres qu'il avait écrites. (The Plus-que-parfait and the Order of Events)
  • Putting a whole in-order sequence in the plus-que-parfait: Je m'étais levé, j'avais mangé, j'étais parti. Told in order, it is a passé composé chain: Je me suis levé, j'ai mangé, je suis parti. (The Plus-que-parfait and the Order of Events)
  • Keeping the question form: Elle m'a demandé est-ce que je venais. An indirect yes/no question uses si: Elle m'a demandé si je venais. (Reporting What Someone Said)
  • Using que for what: Il m'a demandé que je faisais. The object what is ce que: Il m'a demandé ce que je faisais. (Reporting What Someone Said)
  • Keeping the futur after a past reporting verb: Il a dit qu'il viendra. Careful French uses the conditionnel: Il a dit qu'il viendrait. (Reporting What Someone Said)
  • Forgetting to change the person: « Je suis prête. » → Elle a dit que je suis prête. The speaker's je becomes elle: Elle a dit qu'elle était prête. (Reporting What Someone Said)
  • Writing si il. Si elides only before il and ils: s'il, s'ils; but si elle, si on. (Reporting What Someone Said)
  • Using the passé composé with depuis for something still going on: J'ai habité ici depuis deux ans. Still true now → présent: J'habite ici depuis deux ans. (Time Expressions: depuis, pendant, il y a, dans)
  • Using pour for a finished past span: J'ai étudié l'espagnol pour deux ans. A completed span takes pendant (or nothing): J'ai étudié l'espagnol pendant deux ans. (Time Expressions: depuis, pendant, il y a, dans)
  • Using depuis for ago: Je suis arrivé depuis trois ans for I arrived three years ago. A point in the past is il y a: Je suis arrivé il y a trois ans. (Time Expressions: depuis, pendant, il y a, dans)
  • Mixing up dans and en: Le film commence en dix minutes for The film starts in ten minutes. A start counted from now takes dans: Le film commence dans dix minutes. En dix minutes would describe how long something takes (J'ai fait mes devoirs en dix minutes). (Time Expressions: depuis, pendant, il y a, dans)
  • Using the indicatif after jusqu'à ce que: Attends jusqu'à ce qu'il vient or …qu'il viendra. This conjunction takes the subjonctif: Attends jusqu'à ce qu'il vienne. (Time Expressions: depuis, pendant, il y a, dans)
  • Using actuellement to mean actually: Actuellement, je n'aime pas ce film. That means Currently, I don't like this film. For actually, say En fait, je n'aime pas ce film. (Structuring a Story or Report)
  • Chaining every step with et puis… et puis… et puis…. Vary the connectors: d'abord, ensuite, puis, alors, après, enfin. (Structuring a Story or Report)
  • Using the passé composé for a past way of life after autrefois: Autrefois, on a voyagé en canot. A past habit is imparfait: Autrefois, on voyageait en canot. (Structuring a Story or Report)
  • Using dorénavant inside a past story: Dorénavant, il a pris l'autobus. Dorénavant means from now on; in the past use À partir de ce jour-là, il a pris l'autobus. (Structuring a Story or Report)
  • Using premièrement, deuxièmement to tell a story. Those words number points in an argument; for events in time, use d'abord, ensuite, puis, enfin. (Structuring a Story or Report)
