Hypothèses: Conditions and Consequences: Test Review
Everything for the Unit 3 test on one page: the key facts from all 5 lessons, the mistakes that cost the most marks, and a practice test that points you back to the lessons you need.
Key facts
The Conditionnel Présent: Politeness, Advice and Persuasion
- Conditionnel présent = futur stem + imparfait endings (-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient); every stem ends in r.
- Requests and opinions: Pourriez-vous… ? Auriez-vous… ? Qu'est-ce que vous penseriez de… ? Seriez-vous d'accord pour… ?
- Proposals and advice: nous pourrions, on pourrait, tu devrais, il faudrait, il vaudrait mieux, à ta place je + conditionnel.
- Ads use conditionnel questions (Aimeriez-vous… ? Préféreriez-vous… ?) to make you imagine before they tell you what to do.
- In the news, the conditionnel marks unconfirmed information: Le maire démissionnerait = the mayor will reportedly resign.
Si Clauses: Real and Imagined
- Real: si + présent (or passé composé) → présent, futur or impératif.
- Imagined: si + imparfait → conditionnel présent.
- No futur or conditionnel right after si = if; after si = whether, they are normal: Je ne sais pas s'il viendra.
- Si + imparfait → imparfait describes a past habit (whenever): S'il pleuvait, on restait à l'intérieur.
- Au cas où + conditionnel; à condition que / à moins que + subjonctif; même si, sauf si, si jamais follow the si rules.
The Conditionnel Passé
- Conditionnel passé = conditionnel of avoir or être + past participle: j'aurais parlé, je serais parti(e) (I would have…).
- Choose the auxiliary as in the passé composé: être for the short list of movement and change-of-state verbs (aller, venir, partir…) and for all pronominal verbs; avoir for the rest.
- Agreement: with être, the participle usually agrees with the subject (pronominal verbs with a direct object after them do not: elle se serait lavé les mains); with avoir, only with a direct object placed before the verb.
- In the news it marks an unconfirmed past event: Le suspect aurait quitté le pays (has reportedly left).
- J'avais fini = I had finished (real); j'aurais fini = I would have finished (imagined or reported).
Si + Plus-que-parfait: Imagining a Different Past
- Unreal past: si + plus-que-parfait → conditionnel passé: Si j'avais su, je serais venu(e).
- Past condition, present result: si + plus-que-parfait → conditionnel présent: Si j'avais étudié, je serais médecin aujourd'hui.
- Lasting condition, past result: si + imparfait → conditionnel passé: Si j'étais moins timide, je lui aurais parlé hier.
- No conditionnel right after si = if: si j'avais su, not si j'aurais su.
- Sans / avec + noun and à ta place can replace the si clause: Sans toi, j'aurais abandonné.
Regrets, Reproaches and Missed Chances
- j'aurais dû + inf = I should have; j'aurais pu + inf = I could have; il aurait fallu + inf = we should have / it would have been necessary.
- tu aurais pu + inf is a reproach: Tu aurais pu me prévenir !
- j'ai dû = I had to (did) or I must have; j'ai pu = I managed to; je n'ai pas pu = I couldn't (was unable).
- Pronouns go before the infinitive and ne… pas around the auxiliary: Je n'aurais pas dû lui dire.
- Tactful feedback: conditionnel + softeners: Ton introduction aurait peut-être pu être plus courte. Moi, j'aurais ajouté…
Where marks get lost
- Using the futur ending for a polite request: Je voudrai un renseignement. The polite form is the conditionnel: Je voudrais un renseignement (-ais, not -ai). (The Conditionnel Présent: Politeness, Advice and Persuasion)
- Translating I should with the présent: Je dois étudier means I must / I have to study. I should study is Je devrais étudier. (The Conditionnel Présent: Politeness, Advice and Persuasion)
- Translating every English would with the conditionnel: When I was a kid, I would walk to school is a habit, so it is je marchais (imparfait), not je marcherais. (The Conditionnel Présent: Politeness, Advice and Persuasion)
- Taking a conditionnel news headline as confirmed: Le joueur serait blessé means the player is reportedly injured, not that the team has confirmed it. (The Conditionnel Présent: Politeness, Advice and Persuasion)
- Putting the pronoun before devrais: Tu lui devrais parler. It belongs to the infinitive: Tu devrais lui parler. (The Conditionnel Présent: Politeness, Advice and Persuasion)
- Putting the futur after si = if: S'il fera beau, on ira au lac. Correct: S'il fait beau, on ira au lac. (Si Clauses: Real and Imagined)
- Putting the conditionnel after si = if: Si j'aurais le temps, je t'aiderais. Correct: Si j'avais le temps, je t'aiderais. (Si Clauses: Real and Imagined)
- Over-applying the no-futur rule to si = whether: changing Je me demande s'il viendra demain to s'il vient because "there is no futur after si". The futur is correct here (the présent with a future meaning is also possible); the rule applies only to si = if. (Si Clauses: Real and Imagined)
- Using the présent after au cas où: au cas où il pleut. Standard French uses the conditionnel: au cas où il pleuvrait. (Si Clauses: Real and Imagined)
- Mixing the patterns: Si j'avais une voiture, je te conduirai. After si + imparfait, the main clause is conditionnel: je te conduirais. (Si Clauses: Real and Imagined)
- Choosing avoir for a movement verb: J'aurais allé au concert. Aller takes être: Je serais allé(e) au concert. (The Conditionnel Passé)
- Forgetting agreement with être: Elles seraient parti. Correct: Elles seraient parties. (The Conditionnel Passé)
- Making the participle agree with the subject after avoir: Elle aurait finie. With avoir there is no subject agreement: Elle aurait fini. (The Conditionnel Passé)
- Confusing it with the plus-que-parfait: J'avais oublié (I had forgotten) is not j'aurais oublié (I would have forgotten). (The Conditionnel Passé)
- Reading a conditionnel passé headline as fact: Le ministre aurait menti means the minister allegedly lied, not that it has been proven. (The Conditionnel Passé)
- Putting the conditionnel passé in the si clause: Si j'aurais su, je serais venu. Correct: Si j'avais su, je serais venu. (Si + Plus-que-parfait: Imagining a Different Past)
- Using the conditionnel présent for a past result: Si tu m'avais appelé(e), je viendrais. The coming would have happened then: je serais venu(e). (Si + Plus-que-parfait: Imagining a Different Past)
- Using the passé composé in the si clause: Si j'ai étudié, j'aurais réussi. An unreal past condition needs the plus-que-parfait: Si j'avais étudié… (Si + Plus-que-parfait: Imagining a Different Past)
- Forcing both clauses into the past when the result is now: Si j'avais accepté ce poste, j'aurais habité à Montréal aujourd'hui. With aujourd'hui, use the conditionnel présent: j'habiterais. (Si + Plus-que-parfait: Imagining a Different Past)
- Choosing the wrong auxiliary in one clause: Si elle avait parti plus tôt… Partir takes être in every compound tense: Si elle était partie plus tôt… (Si + Plus-que-parfait: Imagining a Different Past)
- Copying English word order: Je devrais avoir appelé for I should have called. Correct: J'aurais dû appeler. (Regrets, Reproaches and Missed Chances)
- Using the passé composé for a regret: J'ai dû t'appeler means I had to call you or I must have called you. I should have called you = J'aurais dû t'appeler. (Regrets, Reproaches and Missed Chances)
- Using the passé composé for a missed chance: J'ai pu venir means I managed to come. I could have come (but didn't) = J'aurais pu venir. (Regrets, Reproaches and Missed Chances)
- Putting the pronoun before the auxiliary: Je lui aurais dû dire. In modern French it goes before the infinitive: J'aurais dû lui dire. (Regrets, Reproaches and Missed Chances)
- Making dû agree: Elle aurait due partir. Before an infinitive, dû is invariable: Elle aurait dû partir. (Regrets, Reproaches and Missed Chances)
