Structures précises: Relatives, Adverbs and Participles: Test Review

Everything for the Unit 4 test on one page: the key facts from all 5 lessons, the mistakes that cost the most marks, and a practice test that points you back to the lessons you need.

Key facts

Ce qui, ce que, ce dont

  • No noun before the relative clause → add ce: ce qui (subject), ce que / ce qu' (direct object), ce dont (object of de).
  • Test: put quelque chose back into the clause. Quelque chose m'inquiète → ce qui; je veux quelque chose → ce que; j'ai besoin de quelque chose → ce dont.
  • Qu'est-ce qui / qu'est-ce que in a direct question become ce qui / ce que in an indirect one: Je ne sais pas ce qui se passe.
  • Tout ce qui / que / dont = everything that: Tout ce que tu dis est vrai.
  • After a comma, ce qui / ce que sums up the whole previous idea (English which): Il neigeait, ce qui nous a retardés.

Lequel after a Preposition, and Où for Time and Place

  • French does not strand prepositions: move the preposition to the front of the relative clause. the pen I write with → le stylo avec lequel j'écris.
  • Things after a preposition: lequel, laquelle, lesquels, lesquelles, agreeing with the noun before them.
  • People after a preposition: usually qui (avec qui, pour qui, à qui); after parmi (and usually entre), use lesquels / lesquelles.
  • à + lequel → auquel, auxquels, auxquelles (but à laquelle); de + lequel → duquel, desquels, desquelles (but de laquelle), used after compound prepositions like près de.
  • Où = where and when after a noun of time: le jour où, l'année où, au moment où. Never le jour quand.
  • Dont replaces a plain de + noun: un voyage dont je me souviendrai (se souvenir de).

Adverbs: Forming, Placing and Persuading

  • Main rule: feminine adjective + -ment: lente → lentement, heureuse → heureusement.
  • Masculine ending in a vowel: masculine + -ment: vrai → vraiment, poli → poliment (exceptions include gaiement, nouvellement, follement, and a few in -u that take a circumflex: assidûment, continûment).
  • -ant → -amment, -ent → -emment, both pronounced [amɑ̃]: constamment, évidemment (but lent → lentement, présent → présentement).
  • Irregulars: bon → bien, mauvais → mal, meilleur → mieux, gentil → gentiment, bref → brièvement; with -ément: précisément, énormément, profondément.
  • Compound tenses: short adverbs go between the auxiliary and the participle (j'ai bien dormi); most manner adverbs in -ment go after (il a répondu poliment).
  • Sans doute = probably; sans aucun doute = without a doubt. Peut-être first → peut-être que or inversion.

Participe Présent and Gérondif

  • Participe présent = nous stem + -ant: finissons → finissant. Irregulars: ayant, étant, sachant.
  • Gérondif = en + participe présent, invariable, sharing the subject of the main verb: while (simultaneity), by (means), if (condition).
  • Tout en + participe adds contrast or stresses simultaneity: Tout en étant d'accord, je…
  • Participe présent alone (often in writing) replaces qui + verb or gives a reason, and does not agree: les personnes souhaitant participer.
  • Adjectif verbal describes a quality and agrees: des enfants obéissants, des routes glissantes.
  • Most English -ing forms are not the participe présent: I like reading = j'aime lire; after eating = après avoir mangé; I'm eating = je mange.

Negation and Choice: ni… ni, soit… soit, ne… que

  • ne… ni… ni = neither… nor; ni replaces pas. Definite articles stay (ni le café ni le thé); indefinite and partitive articles usually disappear (ni frère ni sœur, ni lait ni jus).
  • As a subject: Ni X ni Y ne + verb, usually plural: Ni Paul ni Marie ne sont venus.
  • soit… soit and ou (bien)… ou (bien) = either… or; positive, so no ne and articles stay.
  • ne… que = only (= seulement); not a negation, so du, de la, des stay: Je ne mange que des fruits. Que goes right before what is restricted.
  • Stacking order: plus → jamais → rien / personne: Je ne dirai plus jamais rien. Do not add pas to them (ne… pas jamais is an error).

Where marks get lost

  • Using ce que with a verb that takes de: Ce que j'ai besoin, c'est… The verb is avoir besoin de, so write Ce dont j'ai besoin, c'est… (Ce qui, ce que, ce dont)
  • Dropping ce: Je ne sais pas que tu veux or Tout que tu dis. With no noun in front, the ce is required: ce que tu veux, tout ce que tu dis. (Ce qui, ce que, ce dont)
  • Translating which (referring to a whole idea) with plain qui or que: Il a plu, qui a gâché la fête. The which sums up a whole sentence, so it needs ce: Il a plu, ce qui a gâché la fête (It rained, which ruined the party). (Ce qui, ce que, ce dont)
  • Using quoi before a full clause: Je ne sais pas quoi tu veux. Quoi works before an infinitive (Je ne sais pas quoi faire); before a subject and verb use ce que. (Ce qui, ce que, ce dont)
  • Choosing by the English word instead of the French verb: what I remember is ce dont je me souviens (se souvenir de) but ce que je me rappelle (se rappeler quelque chose). (Ce qui, ce que, ce dont)
  • Stranding the preposition English-style: la chaise que je suis assis sur. Move it forward: la chaise sur laquelle je suis assis (the chair I'm sitting on). (Lequel after a Preposition, and Où for Time and Place)
  • Using quand after a noun of time: le jour quand je suis né. French uses où: le jour où je suis né (the day I was born). (Lequel after a Preposition, and Où for Time and Place)
  • Making lequel agree with the subject instead of the noun: la boîte dans lequel il a mis… Boîte is feminine: dans laquelle. (Lequel after a Preposition, and Où for Time and Place)
  • Using qui for a thing after a preposition: le sac dans qui j'ai mis mes clés. For things, use a form of lequel: le sac dans lequel… (Lequel after a Preposition, and Où for Time and Place)
  • Forgetting the contraction: le film à lequel je pense. À + lequel → auquel: le film auquel je pense (the film I'm thinking of). (Lequel after a Preposition, and Où for Time and Place)
  • Building on the masculine when it ends in a consonant: heureuxment, lentment, activment. Use the feminine: heureusement, lentement, activement. (Adverbs: Forming, Placing and Persuading)
  • Spelling the [amɑ̃] ending by sound: évidamment, constemment. Check the adjective: évident → évidemment, constant → constamment. (Adverbs: Forming, Placing and Persuading)
  • Putting a short adverb after the participle: J'ai mangé bien or Elle a fini déjà. Write J'ai bien mangé, Elle a déjà fini. (Adverbs: Forming, Placing and Persuading)
  • Using bon or mauvais as adverbs: Il chante bon. Adjectives describe nouns; to describe the verb use bien or mal: Il chante bien (He sings well). (Adverbs: Forming, Placing and Persuading)
  • Reading sans doute as without a doubt: Il viendra sans doute means He'll probably come. For certainty say sans aucun doute. (Adverbs: Forming, Placing and Persuading)
  • Using the participe présent for an English progressive: Je suis mangeant. French uses the plain présent (Je mange) or être en train de (Je suis en train de manger). (Participe Présent and Gérondif)
  • Putting -ant after prepositions other than en: après mangeant, avant partant, sans disant. Use an infinitive: après avoir mangé, avant de partir, sans dire. (Participe Présent and Gérondif)
  • Giving the gérondif a different subject from the main verb: En arrivant à la gare, le train était parti. That says the train was arriving. Write Quand je suis arrivé(e) à la gare, le train était parti. (Participe Présent and Gérondif)
  • Making the participe présent agree: les personnes souhaitantes participer. With a complement it is a verb form and stays souhaitant. (Participe Présent and Gérondif)
  • Regularising the three irregulars: avant is the preposition before and savant means learned or scholar. The participles of avoir and savoir are ayant and sachant, and être gives étant. (Participe Présent and Gérondif)
  • Keeping pas with ni: Je n'aime pas ni le thé ni le café. Ni… ni replaces pas: Je n'aime ni le thé ni le café. (Negation and Choice: ni… ni, soit… soit, ne… que)
  • Keeping indefinite or partitive articles after ni: Je n'ai ni un frère ni une sœur. In normal usage, drop them: Je n'ai ni frère ni sœur. (Negation and Choice: ni… ni, soit… soit, ne… que)
  • Changing des / du to de after ne… que: Il ne mange que de légumes. Ne… que is not a negation: Il ne mange que des légumes. (Negation and Choice: ni… ni, soit… soit, ne… que)
  • Forgetting ne when ni… ni is the subject: Ni Paul ni Marie sont venus. Write Ni Paul ni Marie ne sont venus. (Negation and Choice: ni… ni, soit… soit, ne… que)
  • Combining pas with another negative word: Je ne vais pas jamais revenir. Use one: Je ne vais jamais revenir or Je ne reviendrai plus jamais. (Negation and Choice: ni… ni, soit… soit, ne… que)
