Lesson 1 of 5Le subjonctif: Wishes, Feelings and Doubts
Unit 1 · Lesson 1 of 5

Forming the Subjonctif Présent

Before you can use the subjonctif with confidence, its forms have to come automatically. Review the regular rule built on the ils form, learn the two-stem verbs that take nous and vous from the nous form, and memorise the nine verbs with irregular subjonctifs.

Key things to remember

  1. 1Regular subjonctif: ils form of the présent minus -ent, plus -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent: ils choisissent → que je choisisse.
  2. 2nous and vous take their stem from the nous form of the présent, so for most verbs they match the imparfait: que nous prenions, que vous buviez.
  3. 3Two-stem verbs: prenne/prenions, vienne/venions, boive/buvions, reçoive/recevions, doive/devions, croie/croyions, voie/voyions.
  4. 4Irregular: être (sois, soit, soyons), avoir (aie, ait, ayons), faire (fasse), pouvoir (puisse), savoir (sache), aller (aille, allions), vouloir (veuille, voulions), falloir (qu'il faille), pleuvoir (qu'il pleuve).
  5. 5No i after the y of avoir and être: que nous ayons, que vous soyez; but two-stem y verbs add it: que nous voyions, croyions.

In Grade 10 you met the subjonctif after il faut que: Il faut que tu partes (You have to leave). This year it becomes one of the most useful tools you have, because French uses it whenever a sentence is about something wanted, needed, felt or doubted rather than stated as a plain fact. Compare Je sais que tu viens (I know you are coming: a fact) with Je veux que tu viennes (I want you to come: a wish) and Je suis content que tu viennes (I'm glad you are coming: a feeling about it). Same verb, same person, two different moods. The subjonctif is a mood, not a tense: the subjonctif présent covers both present and future time (Il faut que tu viennes demain = You have to come tomorrow). English has nearly lost its subjunctive (you still hear it in I insist that he be on time), so the French forms feel new. The good news: one rule produces almost every form, a handful of verbs have two stems, and only nine common verbs need to be learned by heart. This lesson makes those forms automatic, so the rest of the unit can focus on when to use them.

AIndicatif: presented as fact
  • Je sais qu'elle finit à 5 h. — I know she finishes at 5.
  • Il est certain qu'ils viennent. — It is certain they are coming.
  • Je pense que nous pouvons gagner. — I think we can win.
  • Tu fais tes devoirs. — You are doing your homework.
BSubjonctif: wanted, needed, felt or doubted
  • Il faut qu'elle finisse à 5 h. — She has to finish at 5.
  • Je suis ravie qu'ils viennent. — I'm delighted they are coming.
  • Je doute que nous puissions gagner. — I doubt we can win.
  • Je veux que tu fasses tes devoirs. — I want you to do your homework.

The regular rule: the ils stem plus six endings

1. Take the ils form of the présent: ils choisissent. 2. Drop -ent: choisiss-. 3. Add -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent: que je choisisse, que nous choisissions. The rule works for -er, -ir and -re verbs alike, including many verbs that are irregular in the présent: ils disent → que je dise, ils connaissent → que je connaisse, ils mettent → que je mette, ils écrivent → que j'écrive. Watch three spelling details in the nous and vous forms. Verbs in -ier get a double i: que nous étudiions, que vous oubliiez. Verbs in -yer keep the y and add i: que nous envoyions, que vous payiez. And the softening letters of the présent disappear, because the ending starts with i: que nous mangions (no e), que nous commencions (no ç).

Personparler (ils parlent)choisir (ils choisissent)attendre (ils attendent)dormir (ils dorment)connaître (ils connaissent)

que nousparlionschoisissionsattendionsdormionsconnaissions
que vousparliezchoisissiezattendiezdormiezconnaissiez
qu'ils / qu'ellesparlentchoisissentattendentdormentconnaissent
For every verb except être and avoir, the six endings are the same: -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent. Que becomes qu' before a vowel (qu'il, qu'elle, qu'on, qu'ils, qu'elles), and que je becomes que j' before a vowel (que j'attende).
Two shortcuts that save memorising
First, the nous and vous forms of the subjonctif are identical to the imparfait for almost every verb: que nous parlions = nous parlions, que vous choisissiez = vous choisissiez, que nous prenions = nous prenions. The exceptions are five of the irregular verbs: être, avoir, faire, pouvoir and savoir (que nous soyons, ayons, fassions, puissions, sachions). Second, for regular -er verbs the je, tu, il and ils forms are spelled and pronounced exactly like the présent (que je parle, qu'ils parlent). So in speech, you mostly hear the subjonctif in -ir and -re verbs (finisse, attende, dorme) and in the irregular ones (fasse, soit, aille). That is why examples in this unit often use those verbs.

Two-stem verbs: nous and vous come from the nous form

Verbje, tu, il, ils (from ils)nous, vous (from nous)Example
prendreils prennent → que je prennenous prenons → que nous prenionsIl faut que tu prennes une décision. (You have to make a decision.)
venirils viennent → que je viennenous venons → que nous venionsJe veux qu'elle vienne au souper. (I want her to come to supper.)
boireils boivent → que je boivenous buvons → que nous buvionsIl est important que vous buviez assez d'eau. (It's important that you drink enough water.)
recevoirils reçoivent → que je reçoivenous recevons → que nous recevionsIl faut que nous recevions la réponse avant lundi. (We need to get the answer before Monday.)
devoirils doivent → que je doivenous devons → que nous devionsJe suis surpris qu'il doive partir si tôt. (I'm surprised he has to leave so early.)
croireils croient → que je croienous croyons → que nous croyionsIl faut que tu croies en toi. (You have to believe in yourself.)
voirils voient → que je voienous voyons → que nous voyionsIl faut que vous voyiez ce film. (You have to see this film.)
These verbs have two stems in the présent, and the subjonctif keeps both. Compounds behave the same way: apprendre and comprendre like prendre, revenir, devenir and tenir like venir, apercevoir like recevoir. Spelling-change -er verbs follow the same pattern: que j'achète but que nous achetions, que j'appelle but que nous appelions, que je préfère but que nous préférions.
Count the i's
Two-stem verbs whose nous form has a y keep it and still add the i of the ending: que nous croyions, que vous voyiez, que nous envoyions. It looks odd, but the y belongs to the stem and the i to the ending. The opposite happens with avoir and être: que nous ayons, que vous ayez, que nous soyons, que vous soyez have no i. Writing ayions or soyiez is a very common spelling error, even among native speakers.

Être and avoir are irregular in both stem and endings. Faire, pouvoir and savoir have one irregular stem (fass-, puiss-, sach-) with regular endings throughout. Aller and vouloir have an irregular stem for je, tu, il and ils (aill-, veuill-) but the ordinary nous stem for nous and vous (all-, voul-). The last two irregular verbs, falloir and pleuvoir, are impersonal, so in their everyday sense you need only one form of each: qu'il faille and qu'il pleuve.

Practise the subjonctif présent alongside the other tenses: tick the Grade 10 tenses option, then conjugate regular, two-stem and irregular verbs and check each form.

In context: planning a winter trip

  • Maya : Pour le Festival du Voyageur, il faut qu'on réserve l'hôtel cette semaine. (For the Festival du Voyageur, we need to book the hotel this week.)
  • Théo : D'accord, mais d'abord il faut que je sache combien ça coûte. (OK, but first I need to know how much it costs.)
  • Maya : Mes parents veulent que nous prenions le train et que nous soyons à Winnipeg vendredi soir. (My parents want us to take the train and to be in Winnipeg on Friday evening.)
  • Théo : Alors il faut que tu fasses la liste de ce qu'on apporte, et que ton frère vienne nous chercher à la gare. (Then you need to make the list of what we're bringing, and your brother needs to come and get us at the station.)
  • Maya : Et toi et ta sœur, il est essentiel que vous ayez des vêtements très chauds : il peut faire −30 °C ! (And you and your sister, it's essential that you have very warm clothes: it can get down to −30 °C!)

Pick out every subjonctif and its source. réserve: regular -er (ils réservent), identical to the présent. sache: irregular savoir. prenions: two-stem prendre, nous form from nous prenons. soyons: irregular être, no i. fasses: irregular faire. vienne: two-stem venir, from ils viennent. ayez: irregular avoir, no i. Every one follows il faut que, vouloir que or il est essentiel que, the triggers of the next lesson. Notice too that the speakers say on for we (il faut qu'on réserve), which is normal in conversation, and mix it with nous (que nous prenions); both are correct, and nous sounds a little more formal.

Worked examples

Reveal one step at a time and try to beat it to the next line.

Example 1
Complete: Il faut que nous ___ (recevoir) les formulaires avant vendredi.
Example 2
Complete: Je veux que tu ___ (croire) ce que je te dis.
Example 3
Complete both: Il est important que vous ___ (être) prêts et que vous ___ (avoir) vos billets.
Example 4
Complete: J'ai peur qu'il ___ (pleuvoir) pendant le match, mais il ___ (falloir) qu'on joue quand même. (The second blank is présent indicatif.)

Where marks get lost

  • Adding an i after the y of avoir or être: que nous ayions, que vous soyiez. Correct: que nous ayons, que vous soyez.
  • Using the ils stem for nous and vous in two-stem verbs: que nous prennions, que vous boiviez. Correct: que nous prenions, que vous buviez (from nous prenons, nous buvons).
  • Treating aller and vouloir as irregular in every person: que nous aillions, que vous veuilliez. Correct: que nous allions, que vous vouliez.
  • Dropping the i of the ending in -ier and two-stem y verbs: que nous étudions, que vous voyez (these are the présent). Correct: que nous étudiions, que vous voyiez.
  • Starting from the infinitive instead of the ils form: que je finise (from fini-). Correct: ils finissent → que je finisse.
