Précision: Sharpening the Basics: Test Review

Everything for the Unit 1 test on one page: the key facts from all 5 lessons, the mistakes that cost the most marks, and a practice test that points you back to the lessons you need.

Key facts

The Present Tense, Sharpened

  • Boot verbs (acheter, préférer, appeler, jeter, envoyer, payer) change their stem for je, tu, il/elle/on and ils/elles — never for nous or vous.
  • -ger and -cer verbs change only for nous: nous mangeons, nous commençons, to keep the soft sound before o.
  • boire: bois, boit, buvons, boivent · recevoir: reçois, recevons, reçoivent · croire: crois, croyons, croient · devoir: dois, devons, doivent.
  • partir, sortir, dormir drop the stem's last consonant in the singular: je pars, je sors, je dors — but nous partons, nous sortons, nous dormons.
  • chercher, attendre, écouter, regarder, payer, demander take a direct object with no preposition; téléphoner à, répondre à, ressembler à, obéir à need à.
  • Before an infinitive: apprendre à, commencer à, réussir à · décider de, essayer de, oublier de · no preposition after aimer, vouloir, pouvoir, devoir, espérer, aller.

Savoir or Connaître?

  • savoir: sais, sais, sait, savons, savez, savent · connaître: connais, connais, connaît, connaissons, connaissez, connaissent.
  • savoir + infinitive = to know how to: Je sais nager. No word for how is added.
  • savoir + que / si / où / quand / pourquoi / comment + clause. Connaître is never followed by a clause.
  • connaître + person, place or work: Je connais ta sœur, je connais Québec, je connais ce film.
  • In the past: je savais = I knew, j'ai su = I found out; je connaissais = I knew (was familiar with), j'ai connu = I met.

Asking Questions: Inversion and Interrogatives

  • Three registers: intonation (informal), est-ce que (neutral), inversion (formal): Tu viens ? · Est-ce que tu viens ? · Viens-tu ?
  • Inversion: verb + hyphen + pronoun. Add -t- when the verb ends in a vowel before il, elle, on: a-t-il, parle-t-elle, va-t-on.
  • Noun subject: keep the noun, then invert with the matching pronoun: Marie parle-t-elle français ? Tes parents habitent-ils ici ?
  • In compound tenses, invert the auxiliary: As-tu fini ? Est-elle partie ?
  • quel / quelle / quels / quelles agree with the noun; lequel / laquelle / lesquels / lesquelles mean which one(s).
  • qui = who; que / qu'est-ce que = what (object); qu'est-ce qui = what (subject); quoi after a preposition. The preposition always comes first: À qui parles-tu ?

Adjectives in Depth and Adverbs

  • bel, nouvel, vieil replace beau, nouveau, vieux directly before a masculine singular noun starting with a vowel or mute h: un bel hôtel, un nouvel ami, un vieil homme.
  • Some adjectives change meaning with position — before = figurative, after = literal: mon ancienne école (former) / une maison ancienne (old); ma propre chambre (own) / une chambre propre (clean).
  • Adverb = feminine adjective + -ment (lentement, heureusement), or masculine + -ment when it ends in a vowel (vraiment, poliment).
  • -ant → -amment, -ent → -emment: couramment, constamment, évidemment, récemment — both endings sound the same.
  • bon → bien, mauvais → mal. Adjectives agree with nouns; adverbs never agree.

Comparing Qualities, Quantities and Actions

  • Adjectives and adverbs: plus / moins / aussi + word + que. The adjective agrees: Elle est plus grande que lui.
  • Nouns: plus de / moins de / autant de + noun + que (no article). Verbs: verb + plus / moins / autant que.
  • bon → meilleur (agrees), bien → mieux (never changes), mauvais → pire or plus mauvais. Never plus bon or plus bien.
  • Superlative: le / la / les plus + adjective, repeating the article when the adjective follows the noun; in = de: la plus grande ville du Canada.
  • plus de / moins de + a number: plus de trente personnes. After que, use a stressed pronoun: que moi, que toi, qu'elle.

Where marks get lost

  • Writing nous mangons or nous commencons — without the e or the cédille the letters would be pronounced g as in go and k. Correct: nous mangeons, nous commençons. (The Present Tense, Sharpened)
  • Putting the accent in the wrong forms: j'achete (missing) or nous achètons (extra). The grave accent appears only inside the boot: j'achète but nous achetons. (The Present Tense, Sharpened)
  • Doubling in the wrong place: ils appelent and nous appellons are both wrong. Correct: ils appellent, nous appelons. (The Present Tense, Sharpened)
  • Translating English prepositions word for word: je cherche pour mon sac or j'attends pour le bus. Chercher and attendre already contain for: je cherche mon sac, j'attends le bus. (The Present Tense, Sharpened)
  • Conjugating irregulars as if they were regular: ils boient, ils recevent, nous partissons. Correct: ils boivent, ils reçoivent, nous partons. (The Present Tense, Sharpened)
  • Using connaître for a skill: je connais nager. A skill is savoir + infinitive: je sais nager. (Savoir or Connaître?)
  • Using connaître before a clause: je connais qu'elle est malade. Any que, si, où clause needs savoir: je sais qu'elle est malade. (Savoir or Connaître?)
  • Using savoir for a person or place: je sais ta sœur, tu sais Montréal ? Use connaître: je connais ta sœur, tu connais Montréal ? (Savoir or Connaître?)
  • Translating I know how to swim as je sais comment nager. For a skill, French uses savoir + infinitive directly: je sais nager. Comment is for explaining a method: je sais comment ouvrir cette porte (I know how to open this door). (Savoir or Connaître?)
  • Using j'ai su or j'ai connu for a background state. I knew he was sick is je savais qu'il était malade; j'ai su means I found out. (Savoir or Connaître?)
  • Inverting a noun directly: Parle Marie français ? Keep the noun and add a pronoun: Marie parle-t-elle français ? (Asking Questions: Inversion and Interrogatives)
  • Forgetting the -t- (A-il faim ?, Parle-elle ?) or adding it where the verb already ends in t or d (Est-t-il ?, Prend-t-elle ?). Correct: A-t-il faim ? Parle-t-elle ? Est-il ? Prend-elle ? (Asking Questions: Inversion and Interrogatives)
  • Ending with a preposition, English-style: Qui parles-tu à ? The preposition goes first: À qui parles-tu ? (Asking Questions: Inversion and Interrogatives)
  • Mixing up qu'est-ce que and qu'est-ce qui: Qu'est-ce que se passe ? When what is the subject of the verb, use qui at the end: Qu'est-ce qui se passe ? (Asking Questions: Inversion and Interrogatives)
  • Not agreeing quel with its noun: Quel heure est-il ?, Quel est ta couleur préférée ? Heure and couleur are feminine: Quelle heure est-il ? Quelle est ta couleur préférée ? (Asking Questions: Inversion and Interrogatives)
  • Using the ordinary masculine before a vowel: un beau homme, un nouveau ami, un vieux arbre. Correct: un bel homme, un nouvel ami, un vieil arbre. (Adjectives in Depth and Adverbs)
  • Spelling -amment/-emment by ear: évidamment, récamment. Check the adjective: évident → évidemment, récent → récemment. (Adjectives in Depth and Adverbs)
  • Building the adverb from the masculine when it ends in a consonant: heureuxment, lentment. Use the feminine: heureusement, lentement. (Adjectives in Depth and Adverbs)
  • Mixing up bon and bien: Il chante bon or C'est une bien idée. Bien describes how he sings; bonne describes the idea: Il chante bien. C'est une bonne idée. (Adjectives in Depth and Adverbs)
  • Putting a meaning-change adjective on the wrong side: ma chambre propre when you mean my own room. Own goes before: ma propre chambre. (Adjectives in Depth and Adverbs)
  • Writing plus bon or plus bien. The comparatives are irregular: meilleur (adjective) and mieux (adverb). (Comparing Qualities, Quantities and Actions)
  • Using aussi with a noun, or keeping the article: aussi de livres, plus des livres. Quantity takes autant de / plus de with no article: autant de livres, plus de livres. (Comparing Qualities, Quantities and Actions)
  • Translating in after a superlative as dans: la plus grande ville dans le Canada. Use de: la plus grande ville du Canada. (Comparing Qualities, Quantities and Actions)
  • Using plus que before a number: plus que trente élèves. With numbers, more than is plus de: plus de trente élèves. (Comparing Qualities, Quantities and Actions)
  • Dropping the second article when the adjective follows the noun: la ville plus intéressante. Repeat it: la ville la plus intéressante. (Comparing Qualities, Quantities and Actions)
