Le passé: Telling Stories in the Past: Test Review

Everything for the Unit 2 test on one page: the key facts from all 5 lessons, the mistakes that cost the most marks, and a practice test that points you back to the lessons you need.

Key facts

The Passé Composé and Past-Participle Agreement

  • Passé composé = present of avoir or être + past participle. ne...pas and short adverbs (déjà, bien, trop) go around or after the auxiliary: je n'ai pas fini, j'ai déjà mangé.
  • With être (non-pronominal verbs), the participle agrees with the subject: elles sont parties, ma mère est née à Moncton.
  • With avoir, the participle agrees only with a direct object placed before the verb (le, la, l', les, me, te, nous, vous, que, quel + noun): Les lettres ? Je les ai écrites.
  • No agreement with en, with indirect objects (lui, leur, nous = to us), or with an object that comes after: J'en ai pris. Je leur ai parlé. J'ai écrit la lettre.
  • monter, descendre, sortir, rentrer, retourner, passer take avoir when they have a direct object: elle est sortie but elle a sorti le chien.
  • Irregular participles: eu, bu, connu, cru, dû, lu, pu, reçu, su, vécu, vu, voulu · mis, pris · dit, écrit, fait · ouvert, offert · été, né, mort.

Imparfait or Passé Composé?

  • Imparfait = nous stem of the present (minus -ons) + -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. Only être is irregular: ét-.
  • Imparfait: habits with no fixed number, description and states, actions in progress (was -ing). Passé composé: completed events that move the story forward.
  • A specific number of times (trois fois) or a measured, finished span (pendant cinq ans) → passé composé, however long it lasted.
  • Interrupted action: Je dormais (imparfait, in progress) quand l'alarme a sonné (passé composé, the interruption).
  • Meaning shifts: je savais (I knew) / j'ai su (I found out); je connaissais (I knew) / j'ai connu (I met); j'avais peur (I was afraid) / j'ai eu peur (I got scared).
  • le samedi = every Saturday (imparfait for a past habit); samedi = one Saturday (passé composé for an event).

The Plus-que-parfait: The Past Before the Past

  • Plus-que-parfait = imparfait of avoir or être + past participle: j'avais fini, elle était partie, nous nous étions levés.
  • Same auxiliary and same agreement rules as the passé composé: elles étaient arrivées; les photos que j'avais prises.
  • Use it for an action completed before another past action or moment: Quand je suis arrivé, le train était déjà parti.
  • English often drops had; French does not: J'ai remarqué que j'avais oublié mes clés. If had can be added in English, use the plus-que-parfait.
  • In reported speech after a past verb, the passé composé becomes the plus-que-parfait: J'ai fini → Il a dit qu'il avait fini.
  • Si seulement + plus-que-parfait expresses a regret: Si seulement j'avais su !

Reflexive, Reciprocal and Passive Pronominal Verbs

  • The pronoun matches the subject, even before an infinitive: je vais me coucher, nous devons nous dépêcher.
  • All pronominal verbs take être in the passé composé: je me suis levé(e), elles se sont amusées.
  • No agreement if a direct object follows the verb: elle s'est lavé les mains, il s'est cassé la jambe.
  • No agreement if the verb takes à + person: ils se sont parlé, elles se sont écrit, nous nous sommes téléphoné, ils se sont souri.
  • Otherwise agree with the subject: elle s'est levée, ils se sont rencontrés, elles se sont disputées.
  • Passive se states general facts with a thing as subject: Le français se parle au Canada. Ça ne se fait pas.

Telling a Life Story: Biography and Autobiography

  • Biography = il / elle, factual; autobiography = je, with memories and feelings. Same structure: introduction → childhood → turning points → achievements → legacy.
  • Birth and death are events: il est né, elle est née, il est mort (passé composé with être). Childhood description and habits: imparfait.
  • en 1985 · le 12 avril 1985 · le 1er juillet (premier) · dans les années 1990 · au XXe siècle · à l'âge de dix ans.
  • pendant (finished, passé composé) · depuis + présent (still true) · il y a (ago): J'habite ici depuis 2019. J'ai déménagé il y a six ans.
  • après avoir fini · après être arrivé(e) · avant de partir — never an -ing form after après or avant.
  • Recognise the passé simple in published texts: il fut, elle eut, il naquit, elle mourut, il fonda.
