Unit 2 · Lesson 5 of 5

Telling a Life Story: Biography and Autobiography

Put every past tense of the unit to work in a full life story: the structure of a biography or autobiography, the tense each part relies on, dates and time expressions (en, depuis, pendant, il y a), linking with après avoir and avant de, and recognising the passé simple in published biographies.

Key things to remember

  1. 1Biography = il / elle, factual; autobiography = je, with memories and feelings. Same structure: introduction → childhood → turning points → achievements → legacy.
  2. 2Birth and death are events: il est né, elle est née, il est mort (passé composé with être). Childhood description and habits: imparfait.
  3. 3en 1985 · le 12 avril 1985 · le 1er juillet (premier) · dans les années 1990 · au XXe siècle · à l'âge de dix ans.
  4. 4pendant (finished, passé composé) · depuis + présent (still true) · il y a (ago): J'habite ici depuis 2019. J'ai déménagé il y a six ans.
  5. 5après avoir fini · après être arrivé(e) · avant de partir — never an -ing form after après or avant.
  6. 6Recognise the passé simple in published texts: il fut, elle eut, il naquit, elle mourut, il fonda.

In Grade 9 you described a past weekend in a few sentences. A life story is the same skill at full scale: dozens of verbs across many years, each in the right tense, held together by dates and linking words. You now have all the tools — the passé composé with correct agreement, the imparfait, the plus-que-parfait and pronominal verbs. This lesson shows how to organise them. A biography tells someone else's life (il, elle) and stays factual. An autobiography tells your own (je) and adds memories and feelings. Both follow the same structure, and both are common forms you will read and write: museum panels, profiles of athletes or artists, award nominations, and personal narratives.

Dates and time expressions

ExpressionMeaningExample

dans les années + decadein the ...sdans les années 1990 (in the 1990s)

à l'âge de + ageat the age ofÀ l'âge de dix ans, il a déménagé.
quelques / deux ans plus tarda few / two years laterDeux ans plus tard, elle a ouvert un restaurant.
dèsfrom ... on, as early asDès son enfance, elle aimait dessiner.
Pendant, depuis or il y a?
pendant + a length of time = for a period that is over → passé composé: J'ai habité à Sudbury pendant six ans (I no longer live there). depuis + a length or a starting point = for a period that is still going on → présent: J'habite à Sudbury depuis six ans / depuis 2020 (I still live there). il y a + a length of time = ago → passé composé: J'ai déménagé il y a six ans. English says I have lived here for six years, which tempts students into j'ai habité ici depuis six ans. French uses the present because the situation is still true.

Linking events: après avoir and avant de

StructureMeaningExample
après avoir + past participleafter doing / after having doneAprès avoir terminé ses études, elle est partie en France. (After finishing her studies, she left for France.)
après être + past participle (agrees with the subject)after doing (être verbs)Après être arrivée à Montréal, elle a trouvé un emploi. (After arriving in Montréal, she found a job.)
après s'être + past participleafter doing (pronominal verbs)Après s'être installés à Moncton, ils ont ouvert un café. (After settling in Moncton, they opened a café.)
avant de + infinitivebefore doingAvant de partir, il a dit au revoir à sa famille. (Before leaving, he said goodbye to his family.)
English uses an -ing form after after and before; French never does. Both structures need the same subject in both parts of the sentence: the person who arrived is the person who found the job.
Reading published biographies: the passé simple and the narrative present
Published French biographies and history texts often use two forms you need to recognise but not yet produce. The passé simple is a literary past that replaces the passé composé in formal writing: il fut (he was), elle eut (she had), il naquit (he was born), elle mourut (she died), il fonda (he founded), ils devinrent (they became). The narrative present tells past events in the present tense to make them vivid: En 1608, Samuel de Champlain fonde la ville de Québec (In 1608, Samuel de Champlain founded Québec City). In your own writing, use the passé composé, the imparfait and the plus-que-parfait — and stay consistent.
In context: a model biography of a fictional chef

Translation: Amélie Thibodeau is an Acadian chef known for her updated traditional cooking. She was born on April 12, 1985, in Caraquet, New Brunswick. As a child, she spent her summers at her grandmother's, who taught her the family recipes. At eighteen, she left to study in Montréal. After finishing her culinary studies, she worked for five years in a large restaurant. In 2015 she came back to Acadia because her grandmother had fallen ill. Two years later she opened her own restaurant in Moncton. Today she has been living in Moncton since 2017 and hosts a cooking show. (Amélie is invented for this model; a real biography would come from checked sources.) Follow the tenses: the introduction and conclusion are in the présent, including habite ... depuis 2017 for a situation still going on. Est née, est partie, a travaillé, est revenue, a ouvert are milestones in the passé composé, with née, partie, revenue agreeing with elle. Passait and apprenait are childhood habits in the imparfait, and était tombée is the earlier cause in the plus-que-parfait. Pendant cinq ans closes a finished period, so a travaillé is in the passé composé.

  • Structure: does each paragraph cover one stage of the life, in chronological order?
  • Tenses: did you run the five questions for every past verb? Is every earlier cause in the plus-que-parfait?
  • Agreement: née, partie, arrivée, revenue for a woman; que + avoir participles; pronominal verbs.
  • Time words: en + year, le + date, pendant for finished periods, depuis + présent for ongoing ones, il y a for ago.
  • Variety: at least one après avoir / après être and one avant de to link events.
  • Facts: every date and achievement checked in a reliable source, and no invented quotations.

Worked examples

Reveal one step at a time and try to beat it to the next line.

Example 1
Turn these notes into two sentences of a biography: Karim Haddad — born 3 March 1992, Ottawa — as a child: loved drawing, drew every day.
Example 2
Combine into one sentence with après: Elle est arrivée à Toronto. Elle a trouvé un emploi dans une banque.
Example 3
Translate: I have been playing the piano for eight years, but my brother played the piano for only two years.
Example 4
Write the opening of an autobiography for a girl born in Sudbury in 2010 who lived in an apartment and later moved to a house.

Where marks get lost

  • Forgetting agreement for a woman's birth: elle est né en 1985. Correct: elle est née en 1985 (and je suis née for a female writer).
  • Using the passé composé with depuis for something still true: j'ai habité ici depuis cinq ans. Correct: j'habite ici depuis cinq ans.
  • Writing dans 1990 for in 1990. Years take en: en 1990. dans les années 1990 means in the 1990s.
  • Using an -ing style infinitive after après: après finir ses études. French needs the past infinitive: après avoir fini ses études, après être partie.
  • Writing le un juillet. The first of the month is ordinal: le 1er juillet (le premier juillet); every other day is cardinal: le 2 juillet (le deux juillet).
