Key facts
Future and Conditional: Same Stem, Different Endings
- Futur and conditionnel share one stem: the infinitive (parler-, finir-), the infinitive minus final e for -re verbs (vendr-), or an irregular stem. The stem always ends in r.
- Futur endings: -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont (from avoir). Conditionnel endings: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient (the imparfait endings).
- Irregular stems: ser-, aur-, ir-, fer-, viendr-, tiendr-, verr-, enverr-, pourr-, courr-, mourr-, voudr-, saur-, devr-, recevr-, faudr-, pleuvr-.
- After quand, lorsque, dès que with a future meaning, use the futur in both clauses: Quand j'aurai 16 ans, je travaillerai.
- would meaning used to is the imparfait, not the conditionnel: Chaque été, j'allais au lac.
Using the Conditional: Politeness, Wishes, Advice and Reported Speech
- Politeness: je voudrais, j'aimerais, pourriez-vous, auriez-vous, serait-il possible de… soften a request.
- Advice: tu devrais (you should), vous pourriez (you could), à ta place, je + conditionnel (if I were you, I would).
- Reported speech after a past reporting verb: futur → conditionnel, présent → imparfait, passé composé → plus-que-parfait. The imparfait does not change.
- After a present reporting verb (il dit que), the tenses do not shift: Il dit qu'il viendra.
- In reported speech, que is never dropped, and persons, possessives and time words adjust: demain → le lendemain, hier → la veille.
Si Clauses: Real and Hypothetical
- Never the futur or the conditionnel directly after si meaning if.
- si + il / ils → s'il, s'ils; but si elle, si elles, si on (no elision).
- If I were… = Si j'étais…; If I were you = Si j'étais toi or À ta place.
- Comma after a si clause that comes first; none when it comes second.
The Subjunctive After Il faut que
- Regular subjonctif: ils form of the présent minus -ent, then -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent: ils finissent → que je finisse.
- Two-stem verbs take nous and vous from the nous form: que je prenne / que nous prenions; que je boive / que nous buvions.
- Irregular: être (sois, soit, soyons), avoir (aie, ait, ayons), aller (aille, allions), faire (fasse), pouvoir (puisse), savoir (sache), vouloir (veuille, voulions).
Expressing Opinions, Necessity and Persuasion
- Persuade with a hook question, the impératif (Imaginez…), the conditionnel for proposals (Nous pourrions…), si + imparfait → conditionnel for benefits, and a counterargument (Certains diront que… Cependant, …).
Where marks get lost
- Building the futur on the wrong stem: je allerai, j'avoirai, je pouvoirai. These verbs have irregular stems: j'irai, j'aurai, je pourrai. (Future and Conditional: Same Stem, Different Endings)
- Keeping the e of an -re verb: je vendrerai, je prenderai. Drop the final e and add the ending: je vendrai, je prendrai. (Future and Conditional: Same Stem, Different Endings)
- Mixing the two sets of endings: je parlerait, nous parlerions demain (meaning we will speak). Futur nous parlerons; conditionnel je parlerais. (Future and Conditional: Same Stem, Different Endings)
- Using the present after quand about the future: Quand je suis grand, je serai médecin. French says Quand je serai grand, je serai médecin. (Future and Conditional: Same Stem, Different Endings)
- Translating every would with the conditionnel: Quand j'étais petit, j'irais au parc chaque jour. A past habit takes the imparfait: j'allais au parc chaque jour. (Future and Conditional: Same Stem, Different Endings)
- Using the futur in reported speech after a past verb: Elle a dit qu'elle viendra. In careful writing, after a dit the futur becomes the conditionnel: Elle a dit qu'elle viendrait. (Using the Conditional: Politeness, Wishes, Advice and Reported Speech)
- Dropping que because English drops that: Il a dit il était malade. French needs it every time: Il a dit qu'il était malade. (Using the Conditional: Politeness, Wishes, Advice and Reported Speech)
- Translating should with je dois: Tu dois manger mieux sounds like an order (you must). Advice is Tu devrais manger mieux. (Using the Conditional: Politeness, Wishes, Advice and Reported Speech)
- Being blunt with a stranger: Je veux parler au gérant. In a store or at work, say J'aimerais parler au gérant or Je voudrais parler au gérant. (Using the Conditional: Politeness, Wishes, Advice and Reported Speech)
- Forgetting to change the person: Mon ami a dit que je serais en retard when the friend meant himself. (Using the Conditional: Politeness, Wishes, Advice and Reported Speech)
- Putting the futur after si: Si j'aurai le temps, je t'aiderai. (Si Clauses: Real and Hypothetical)
- Putting the conditionnel after si: Si j'aurais de l'argent, j'achèterais un vélo. (Si Clauses: Real and Hypothetical)
- Mixing the patterns: Si j'avais une voiture, je conduirai à l'école. After si + imparfait, the main clause is conditionnel: je conduirais. (Si Clauses: Real and Hypothetical)
- Eliding si before elle or on: s'elle vient, s'on part. Only il and ils trigger elision: si elle vient, si on part, s'il vient. (Si Clauses: Real and Hypothetical)
- Using the conditionnel for If I were you: Si je serais toi. Were after if is the imparfait in French: Si j'étais toi — or simply À ta place. (Si Clauses: Real and Hypothetical)
- Using the indicatif after il faut que: Il faut que tu fais tes devoirs. Correct: Il faut que tu fasses tes devoirs. (The Subjunctive After Il faut que)
- Putting an infinitive after il faut que: Il faut que je partir. Either Il faut partir (general) or Il faut que je parte (specific person). (The Subjunctive After Il faut que)
- Using the subjonctif after an opinion verb: Je pense que ce soit difficile. (The Subjunctive After Il faut que)
- Forgetting the i in nous and vous forms of -er verbs: Il faut que nous parlons. Correct: Il faut que nous parlions. (The Subjunctive After Il faut que)
- Using que with one subject: Je veux que je parte. With the same subject, use the infinitive: Je veux partir. (The Subjunctive After Il faut que)
- Using the subjonctif after an affirmative opinion: Je pense que ce soit important. Correct: Je pense que c'est important. (Expressing Opinions, Necessity and Persuasion)

Il faut takes the infinitive directly: Il faut recycler. (Expressing Opinions, Necessity and Persuasion)
- Sounding bossy in a formal letter: Vous devez changer le menu. A proposal in the conditionnel persuades better: Vous pourriez changer le menu or Il faudrait changer le menu. (Expressing Opinions, Necessity and Persuasion)
