Lesson 4 of 5Future, Conditional and Subjunctive
Unit 3 · Lesson 4 of 5

The Subjunctive After Il faut que

Grade 9 used il faut + infinitive for general rules; Grade 10 adds il faut que + subjonctif to say what a specific person has to do. Learn how the subjonctif présent is formed, the two-stem verbs, seven key irregular verbs, and the expressions of necessity that trigger it.

Key things to remember

  1. 1Il faut + infinitif = a general rule (Il faut recycler); il faut que + subject + subjonctif = a specific person (Il faut que tu recycles).
  2. 2Regular subjonctif: ils form of the présent minus -ent, then -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent: ils finissent → que je finisse.

Every tense you have learned so far — présent, passé composé, imparfait, plus-que-parfait, futur and (in most modern grammars) the conditionnel — belongs to the indicatif, the mood for stating facts. In Grade 9 you also learned il faut + infinitive for general rules: Il faut manger des légumes (You have to eat vegetables / One must eat vegetables). But what if you want to say that a specific person has to do something — I have to leave, you need to finish, we must be on time? French then uses il faut que + a subject + a verb in a new mood, the subjonctif (subjunctive). The subjonctif signals an action that is not stated as a fact: it is something needed, required or wanted, which may or may not happen. English has almost lost this mood (you can still see it in It is important that he be on time), but French uses it every day. At Grade 10 you need it after a small set of expressions, starting with the most common one in the language: il faut que.

AIl faut + infinitif: general, for everyone
  • Il faut recycler. — We have to recycle. / One must recycle.
  • Il faut dormir huit heures. — You need to sleep eight hours.
  • Il est important de boire de l'eau. — It is important to drink water.
  • Il est nécessaire de réserver. — It is necessary to book.
BIl faut que + subjonctif: a specific person
  • Il faut que tu recycles. — You have to recycle.
  • Il faut que je dorme huit heures. — I need to sleep eight hours.
  • Il est important que vous buviez de l'eau. — It is important that you drink water.
  • Il est nécessaire que nous réservions. — We need to book.

Forming the regular subjonctif

Three steps work for almost every verb. 1. Take the ils form of the présent: ils finissent. 2. Drop -ent to get the stem: finiss-. 3. Add the subjonctif endings -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent. Because the subjonctif almost always appears after que, it is usually learned with que in front: que je finisse. Notice that verbs like partir, dormir, écrire and lire look irregular in the présent but follow these steps perfectly: ils partent → que je parte, ils écrivent → que j'écrive.

que vousparliezfinissiezvendiezpartiezécriviez
qu'ils / qu'ellesparlentfinissentvendentpartentécrivent
For regular -er verbs, the je, tu, il and ils forms look and sound exactly like the présent; only nous and vous differ (que nous parlions, with an i). For many -ir and -re verbs the stem itself changes (finiss-, vend-), so the subjonctif is easier to see. Que becomes qu' before il, elle, on, ils and elles.
Nous and vous: the imparfait look-alikes
The nous and vous forms of the subjonctif are, for almost every verb, identical to the imparfait: que nous parlions / nous parlions, que vous finissiez / vous finissiez. So if you know the imparfait, you already know these two forms. The difference is the context: after il faut que, que nous parlions means that we speak, not we were speaking.

Two-stem verbs

Verbje, tu, il, ils (from ils)nous, vous (from nous)Example
prendreils prennent → que je prennenous prenons → que nous prenionsIl faut que tu prennes le bus. (You have to take the bus.)
venirils viennent → que je viennenous venons → que nous venionsIl faut qu'elle vienne à six heures. (She has to come at six.)
boireils boivent → que je boivenous buvons → que nous buvionsIl faut que vous buviez plus d'eau. (You need to drink more water.)
acheterils achètent → que j'achètenous achetons → que nous achetionsIl faut que j'achète du lait. (I have to buy milk.)
recevoirils reçoivent → que je reçoivenous recevons → que nous recevionsIl est important que tu reçoives ce courriel. (It is important that you get this email.)
voirils voient → que je voienous voyons → que nous voyionsIl faut que je voie le médecin. (I have to see the doctor.)
These verbs have two stems in the présent, and the subjonctif keeps both: the ils stem for je, tu, il and ils, and the nous stem for nous and vous. Apprendre and comprendre work like prendre: que j'apprenne, que nous apprenions.

Être and avoir are irregular everywhere, including their endings (soit, ait). Faire, pouvoir and savoir have one irregular stem (fass-, puiss-, sach-) with regular endings. Aller and vouloir have two stems: aill- and veuill- for je, tu, il and ils, but the regular all- and voul- for nous and vous.

What triggers the subjonctif at Grade 10
Expressions of necessity and importance followed by que and a subject: il faut que (it is necessary that / have to), il est important que (it is important that), il est nécessaire que (it is necessary that). You will also meet vouloir que when one person wants another person to do something: Je veux que tu viennes (I want you to come). Notice the pattern in every case: two different subjects, joined by que. If there is only one subject, use an infinitive instead: Je veux venir (I want to come), never Je veux que je vienne.
Je pense que takes the indicatif
Not every que brings the subjonctif. In the affirmative, je pense que, je crois que, je trouve que, je sais que, j'espère que and il est certain que present something as true or likely, so they take the ordinary indicatif: Je pense qu'il est malade (I think he is sick). J'espère que tu vas bien (I hope you are well). Writing Je pense qu'il soit malade is an error. At this level the subjonctif belongs to necessity, importance and wanting (and, as the next lesson shows, to doubt) — not to a plain opinion.
In context: a message from a store manager
Merci ! Nadia

Translation: Hello, whole team! On Saturday morning we're getting a big delivery. Everyone has to be at the store at 7. Karim, it's important that you do the fruit inventory before opening. Léa and Jun, you need to put the new products on the shelves. We need to finish before 9, because customers arrive early. If you have a question, you need to send it to me before Friday. I think it will be a good day. Thanks! Nadia Every verb after il faut que, il est important que and il est nécessaire que is in the subjonctif: soit (être), fasses (faire), mettiez (ils mettent → mett-), finissions (ils finissent → finiss-), envoyiez (nous envoyons → envoy-). But Je pense que ce sera… is an opinion, so it stays in the indicatif (here the futur).

Where marks get lost

  • Using the indicatif after il faut que: Il faut que tu fais tes devoirs. Correct: Il faut que tu fasses tes devoirs.
  • Putting an infinitive after il faut que: Il faut que je partir. Either Il faut partir (general) or Il faut que je parte (specific person).
  • Using the subjonctif after an opinion verb: Je pense que ce soit difficile. Penser que takes the indicatif: Je pense que c'est difficile.
  • Forgetting the i in nous and vous forms of -er verbs: Il faut que nous parlons. Correct: Il faut que nous parlions.
  • Using que with one subject: Je veux que je parte. With the same subject, use the infinitive: Je veux partir.
