Writing Complex Sentences and Editing Your Work

Turn strings of short sentences into connected writing with si, quand, lorsque and dès que (and the right tense after each), and with connectors of cause, consequence and contrast; then edit with a one-mistake-at-a-time checklist and apply it to three real forms: an FAQ for newcomers, an opinion piece and a report with subheadings.

Key things to remember

  1. 1quand, lorsque, dès que + futur when the time is future: Quand j'arriverai à Paris, je t'appellerai.
  2. 2si + présent → futur in the main clause; never a futur after si meaning if: Si tu viens, nous irons au cinéma.
  3. 3Connectors: car (because, always after the main idea), puisque (since), donc (so), par conséquent (consequently), cependant (however), alors que (whereas).
  4. 4Days, months and languages are lowercase; nationality nouns are capitalised: le lundi 3 janvier, le français, les Français.
  5. 5Past participles agree with the subject after être and with a direct object placed before avoir: Mes amies sont arrivées. Les photos que j'ai prises.

Compare Il pleut. Je reste à la maison. Je regarde un film. with Puisqu'il pleut, je reste à la maison, donc je regarde un film. The second version shows how the ideas are related — cause and consequence — and it reads like Grade 10 writing. Complex sentences are built with two kinds of linking words: conjunctions of time and condition (si, quand, lorsque, dès que), which also decide the tense of the verb that follows, and connectors of cause, consequence and contrast (car, puisque, donc, par conséquent, cependant, alors que). The second half of good writing is editing. Rereading once and hoping to spot everything does not work; rereading several times, each time hunting for one kind of mistake, does. This lesson gives you both tools and three text forms to use them in.

Time and condition: si, quand, lorsque, dès que

WordMeaningTense when the time is futureExample
siifprésent after si, futur in the main clauseSi tu viens, nous irons au cinéma. (If you come, we'll go to the movies.)
quandwhenfutur in both clausesQuand j'arriverai à Paris, je t'appellerai. (When I arrive in Paris, I'll call you.)
lorsquewhen (more formal)futur in both clausesLorsque vous arriverez à l'école, vous recevrez votre horaire. (When you arrive at school, you'll receive your timetable.)
dès queas soon asfutur in both clausesDès que tu arriveras, nous mangerons. (As soon as you arrive, we'll eat.)
English puts a present tense after when and as soon as even when the time is future. French is more logical: if the action is in the future, the verb is in the futur.
Two traps: no futur after si (if), and habits stay in the present
When si means if, it is never followed by the futur or the conditionnel: Si tu viens, nous irons au cinéma, never si tu viendras. And quand only takes the futur when it points to a future moment. For a habit or a general truth, both verbs stay in the présent: Quand il pleut, je prends l'autobus. (Whenever it rains, I take the bus.) Ask yourself: one future event, or something that happens every time?

An editing checklist, one pass at a time

  1. Accords (agreement). Adjectives match their noun. Past participles agree with the subject after être (Mes amies sont arrivées) and with a direct object placed before avoir (Les photos que j'ai prises), but never with the subject of avoir (Elles ont mangé).
  2. Temps des verbes (tenses). Keep tenses consistent within a paragraph. Use the futur after quand, lorsque, dès que for a future time, and the présent after si.
  3. Pronoms (pronouns). Replace a repeated noun with a pronoun before the verb or the auxiliary: J'ai lu le livre → Je l'ai lu.
  4. Accents et orthographe (spelling). Check every é, è, ê, à, ç. Some accents change the meaning: a (has) / à (to), ou (or) / où (where), la (the) / là (there).
  5. Connecteurs (linking words). Join short sentences, and vary your connectors instead of repeating et and mais.
  6. Majuscules et ponctuation (capitals and punctuation). Days, months and languages take no capital; nationality nouns do. Every sentence ends with a punctuation point.
Capital letters: French is not English
In French, days, months and languages are lowercase: le lundi 3 janvier, j'étudie le français. Nationality nouns (people) take a capital: les Français, une Canadienne. Nationality adjectives do not: un élève canadien, la cuisine française. So one sentence can contain both: Les Québécois parlent français — the people are capitalised, the language is not.

Translation: Frequently asked questions — Welcome, new students! When will I receive my timetable? You will receive it as soon as you arrive at the office on the first day. How will I find my classrooms? When you arrive, a student mentor will give you a tour of the school. Do I have to speak French at school? Yes, since ours is a French-language school. However, if you need help, our student mentors will help you. What should I do if it snows a lot? If it snows a lot, the buses may be cancelled; consequently, check the school website before leaving. Where can I eat? In the cafeteria, because eating in the classrooms is not allowed. Notice the tense pattern: dès que and lorsque + futur (arriverez), but si + présent (avez, neige) with the futur in the main clause (aideront, seront).

In context: an opinion piece on learning languages

Translation: In my opinion, all students should learn at least two languages. First, since Canada has two official languages, speaking French opens doors in the job market. Next, learning a language helps us understand other cultures. Some people think it is too hard; however, when you start to understand songs or films, you will see that the effort is worth it. My brother stopped French in Grade 9, whereas I kept going: today I can chat with my Acadian neighbours, because I understand their accent! Consequently, it is important to continue French until Grade 12. The structure is the one in the table: position, two arguments, an answer to the other side, a personal example and a conclusion — held together by connectors.

Worked examples

Reveal one step at a time and try to beat it to the next line.

Example 1
Join with dès que, keeping the future meaning: Tu arrives à la gare. Je t'appelle.
Example 2
Translate: Since you speak French, you could help the newcomers.
Example 3
Edit this sentence with the checklist: Le Mardi 4 Février, mes amies sont arrivé en retard car l'autobus etait en panne.
Example 4
Translate: If it rains tomorrow, we will stay home.

Where marks get lost

  • Copying the English present after when: Quand j'arrive à Paris, je t'appellerai. For a future time, write Quand j'arriverai à Paris….
  • Putting the futur after si: Si tu viendras, on ira au parc. Write Si tu viens, on ira au parc.
  • Putting car before the main idea: Car il pleut, je reste à la maison. Use Puisqu'il pleut or Comme il pleut at the start, or move car to the middle.
  • Capitalising days, months and languages: le Lundi 3 Janvier, j'étudie le Français. Write le lundi 3 janvier, j'étudie le français.
  • Forgetting agreement with être: Mes amies sont arrivé. The participle agrees with the subject: arrivées.
