Raconter: Past, Present and Future: Test Review

Everything for the Unit 3 test on one page: the key facts from all 5 lessons, the mistakes that cost the most marks, and a practice test that points you back to the lessons you need.

Key facts

The Passé Composé with Avoir

  • Passé composé = subject + avoir in the présent (ai, as, a, avons, avez, ont) + past participle: j'ai parlé.
  • Regular participles: -er → -é (parlé), -ir → -i (fini), -re → -u (vendu).
  • Key irregulars: eu, été, fait, pris, mis, vu, lu, bu, dit, écrit, pu, voulu, dû, su, reçu, ouvert.
  • With avoir, the participle does not agree with the subject: elles ont fini, not elles ont finies.
  • Ne … pas goes around the auxiliary: je n'ai pas vu. Short adverbs sit between auxiliary and participle: j'ai déjà mangé.
  • One French form covers three English ones: j'ai mangé = I ate / I have eaten / I did eat.

The Passé Composé with Être

  • The house verbs use être: aller, venir, arriver, partir, entrer, sortir, monter, descendre, naître, mourir, rester, tomber, retourner, rentrer, devenir, revenir.
  • Every reflexive verb uses être: je me suis levé(e), elle s'est amusée.
  • With être, the participle agrees with the subject: add -e for feminine, -s for plural, -es for feminine plural; a mixed group is masculine plural.
  • Participles to watch in this group: né (naître), mort (mourir) and venu, devenu, revenu (the venir family); descendre is regular: descendu.
  • Ne … pas wraps the auxiliary (and any reflexive pronoun): elle n'est pas venue, je ne me suis pas levé.

The Imparfait: Describing the Past

  • Imparfait stem = nous form of the présent minus -ons: nous finissons → finiss-.
  • Endings for every verb: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
  • The only irregular stem is être → ét-: j'étais, nous étions.
  • Use it for description (il faisait froid), states and feelings (j'avais peur), habits (je jouais au soccer le samedi) and actions in progress (je lisais).
  • Mangeais keeps the e and commençais keeps the ç before a; étudier gives nous étudiions.

Talking About the Future

  • Futur proche = aller (présent) + infinitive: je vais travailler. Negative: je ne vais pas travailler.
  • Futur simple = infinitive + -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont; -re verbs drop the final e: je vendrai.
  • Key irregular stems: ser- (être), aur- (avoir), ir- (aller), fer- (faire), viendr- (venir), verr- (voir), pourr- (pouvoir), voudr- (vouloir), saur- (savoir), devr- (devoir).
  • Every future stem ends in r.
  • After quand about the future, use the future: Quand j'aurai seize ans, je travaillerai.
  • Jobs: gardien(ne) d'enfants, caissier/caissière, livreur/livreuse; qualities: disponible, responsable, débrouillard(e), honnête.

Time Markers, Sequencing and Si Clauses

  • Past markers: hier, avant-hier, la semaine passée/dernière, l'année passée/dernière, il y a + time (ago). Future markers: demain, après-demain, la semaine prochaine, dans + time (from now).
  • Il y a deux jours = two days ago; dans deux jours = in two days (from now); en deux jours = within two days (how long it takes).
  • In a story about another day, use le lendemain (the next day) and la veille (the day before), not demain and hier.
  • Sequence a story with d'abord, ensuite, puis, après, enfin.
  • Real condition: si + présent → futur simple: S'il pleut, je resterai à la maison. Never put the futur right after a condition si.
  • Si elides only before il and ils: s'il, s'ils, but si elle, si on.

Where marks get lost

  • Leaving out the auxiliary, as in Je mangé une pomme. French always needs both parts: J'ai mangé une pomme. (The Passé Composé with Avoir)
  • Using the infinitive instead of the participle: J'ai manger. The ending sounds the same, but the spelling must be mangé. (The Passé Composé with Avoir)
  • Making up regular participles for irregular verbs: prendu, metté, faisé, lisé. Correct: pris, mis, fait, lu. (The Passé Composé with Avoir)
  • Putting pas after the participle: Je n'ai vu pas le film. Ne … pas wraps the auxiliary: Je n'ai pas vu le film. (The Passé Composé with Avoir)
  • Adding agreement with avoir: Elles ont mangées. With avoir the participle stays mangé. (The Passé Composé with Avoir)
  • Using avoir with a house verb: J'ai allé au cinéma. Correct: Je suis allé(e) au cinéma. (The Passé Composé with Être)
  • Forgetting agreement: Elle est parti. With être the participle matches the subject: Elle est partie. (The Passé Composé with Être)
  • Making a mixed group feminine: Marc et Sophie sont arrivées. One masculine member makes it masculine plural: arrivés. (The Passé Composé with Être)
  • Dropping the reflexive pronoun in the past: Je suis levé à sept heures. Keep it: Je me suis levé à sept heures. (The Passé Composé with Être)
  • Using the regular pattern for naître and mourir: elle est naîtrée, il est mouru. Correct: elle est née, il est mort. (The Passé Composé with Être)
  • Building the stem from the infinitive instead of the nous form: je finais for finir. The stem is finiss-: je finissais. (The Imparfait: Describing the Past)
  • Treating être like other verbs: je somais. Être has its own stem: j'étais. (The Imparfait: Describing the Past)
  • Dropping the e in -ger verbs: je mangais. Keep it to keep the soft g: je mangeais. (The Imparfait: Describing the Past)
  • Using the passé composé for a habit: Quand j'étais petit, j'ai joué au soccer tous les jours. A repeated habit needs the imparfait: je jouais. (The Imparfait: Describing the Past)
  • Translating I was reading word for word: J'étais lisant. French has no was …ing form; the imparfait does the job: Je lisais. (The Imparfait: Describing the Past)
  • Adding à in the futur proche: Je vais à travailler. The infinitive follows aller directly: Je vais travailler. (Talking About the Future)
  • Using the regular stem for an irregular verb: j'allerai, je faisrai, j'avoirai. Correct: j'irai, je ferai, j'aurai. (Talking About the Future)
  • Keeping the e of -re verbs: je vendreai. Drop it: je vendrai. (Talking About the Future)
  • Using the present after quand: Quand je suis grand, je serai pilote. Use the future: Quand je serai grand, je serai pilote. (Talking About the Future)
  • Adding an article before a job: Je serai une caissière. After être and devenir, leave it out: Je serai caissière. (Talking About the Future)
  • Putting the future after si: Si tu viendras, nous mangerons. The si clause takes the présent: Si tu viens, nous mangerons. (Time Markers, Sequencing and Si Clauses)
  • Writing si il instead of s'il. Si elides before il and ils (but not before elle or on). (Time Markers, Sequencing and Si Clauses)
  • Copying the English order of two days ago: deux jours il y a. In French, il y a comes first: Je suis arrivé il y a deux jours. (Time Markers, Sequencing and Si Clauses)
  • Using en for in meaning from now: Je partirai en dix minutes. Use dans: Je partirai dans dix minutes. (Time Markers, Sequencing and Si Clauses)
  • Using demain inside a past story: Samedi, j'ai travaillé, et demain je me suis reposé. Use le lendemain. (Time Markers, Sequencing and Si Clauses)
