Communiquer: Pronouns, Commands and Connecting Ideas: Test Review

Everything for the Unit 4 test on one page: the key facts from all 5 lessons, the mistakes that cost the most marks, and a practice test that points you back to the lessons you need.

Key facts

Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns

  • Direct object pronouns: me, te, le, la, nous, vous, les (m', t', l' before a vowel). They replace a noun with no preposition before it.
  • Indirect object pronouns: me, te, lui, nous, vous, leur. They replace à + a person. Lui = to him or to her.
  • The pronoun goes in front of the conjugated verb: Je la regarde. Je ne la regarde pas.
  • Passé composé: in front of the auxiliary: Je l'ai vu. Je lui ai parlé. Je ne l'ai pas vu.
  • Aller + infinitive: in front of the infinitive: Je vais le voir. Je ne vais pas le voir.
  • Follow the French verb: écouter, regarder, attendre, chercher take a direct object; téléphoner à, répondre à, parler à take an indirect one.

The Pronouns Y and En

  • Y replaces a place (à, au, en, dans, chez + place) and means there: Je vais à Toronto → J'y vais.
  • Y also replaces à + a thing or idea: Je pense à l'examen → J'y pense. For à + a person, use lui / leur.
  • En replaces de + noun, including du, de la, de l', des: Tu veux du pain ? → Oui, j'en veux.
  • With a number or quantity, en replaces the noun and the quantity stays after the verb: J'en ai deux. Elle en mange beaucoup.
  • Y and en go in the same place as other object pronouns: Je n'y vais pas. J'en ai mangé. Je vais y aller.

Giving Instructions: The Impératif

  • The impératif has three forms — tu, nous, vous — taken from the present tense without the subject: finis, finissons, finissez.
  • -er verbs (and aller) drop the -s in the tu form: tu manges → Mange !, tu vas → Va ! (but Vas-y !).
  • Irregular forms: être → sois, soyons, soyez; avoir → aie, ayons, ayez; savoir → sache, sachons, sachez.
  • The nous form means let's: Allons au parc ! (Let's go to the park!)
  • Negative: ne + verb + pas, pronoun before the verb: Ne le touche pas !
  • Affirmative: pronoun after the verb with a hyphen; me / te become moi / toi: Écoute-moi ! Lève-toi !

Linking Ideas: Qui, Que and Connectors

  • Qui = subject of the next verb, so it is followed directly by a verb: l'amie qui habite à Moncton.
  • Que = object, so it is followed by a subject + verb: le livre que j'adore. Que → qu' before a vowel; qui never elides.
  • Both qui and que work for people and things, and que can never be left out the way English drops that.
  • Cause: parce que (speech, can start a sentence) and car (written, mid-sentence). Result: donc.
  • Contrast: mais, cependant (however), pourtant (yet, even so). Addition: et, d'ailleurs, ainsi que.
  • En effet = indeed (confirms); en fait = actually (corrects).

Politeness and Register: Tu, Vous and Je voudrais

  • Tu: one friend, classmate, family member, child or pet. Vous: an adult you don't know well, anyone in a formal situation, and any group.
  • When in doubt, use vous and wait for On peut se tutoyer ? Canadian French uses tu more widely than France.
  • Soften requests with je voudrais, j'aimerais, pourriez-vous / pourrais-tu, and s'il vous plaît / s'il te plaît. Je veux sounds demanding to strangers.
  • À tout à l'heure = later today; à tout de suite = in a moment; à bientôt = soon; à la prochaine = until next time.
  • Merci → de rien / pas de quoi (casual), je vous en prie (polite), bienvenue (Québec). Je suis désolé(e) → Ce n'est pas grave.

Where marks get lost

  • Putting the pronoun after the verb, English-style: Je regarde le. The pronoun goes in front: Je le regarde. (Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns)
  • Using lui with écouter or attendre because English says listen to him or wait for her: Je lui écoute. These verbs take a direct object in French: Je l'écoute. (Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns)
  • Using le or la with téléphoner à or répondre à: Je la téléphone. These verbs take à, so the pronoun is indirect: Je lui téléphone. (Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns)
  • Placing the pronoun between the auxiliary and the participle: J'ai le vu. It goes in front of the auxiliary: Je l'ai vu. (Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns)
  • Putting the pronoun in front of aller in the futur proche: Je le vais voir. It belongs to the infinitive: Je vais le voir. (Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns)
  • Leaving out en the English way: Tu as un stylo ? — Oui, j'ai un. French needs en: Oui, j'en ai un. (The Pronouns Y and En)
  • Dropping the quantity: J'ai trois cousins → J'en ai. That means I have some. Keep the number: J'en ai trois. (The Pronouns Y and En)
  • Using y for a person: Je pense à ma sœur → J'y pense. Y is for things and places; for people, à is kept with a stressed pronoun (Je pense à elle) — a Grade 10 point, but avoid y here. (The Pronouns Y and En)
  • Putting y before aller in the futur proche: J'y vais aller. It belongs to the infinitive: Je vais y aller. (The Pronouns Y and En)
  • Keeping un in a negative answer: Non, je n'en ai pas un. Just say Non, je n'en ai pas. (The Pronouns Y and En)
  • Keeping the -s on an -er verb in the tu form: Manges ta soupe ! Write Mange ta soupe ! (Giving Instructions: The Impératif)
  • Using the present tense of être or avoir as a command: Êtes calmes ! or As du courage ! Use Soyez calmes ! and Aie du courage ! (Giving Instructions: The Impératif)
  • Putting the pronoun in front of an affirmative command: Le regarde ! It goes after with a hyphen: Regarde-le ! (Giving Instructions: The Impératif)
  • Writing Écoute-me ! or Lève-te ! After the verb, me and te become moi and toi: Écoute-moi ! Lève-toi ! (Giving Instructions: The Impératif)
  • Keeping the subject: Vous mettez le sel is a statement (You put the salt). For an instruction, drop vous: Mettez le sel. (Giving Instructions: The Impératif)
  • Dropping que like English drops that: C'est le film j'aime. French needs it: C'est le film que j'aime. (Linking Ideas: Qui, Que and Connectors)
  • Choosing qui because English says who: la fille qui je connais. Je is the subject, so la fille is the object: la fille que je connais. (Linking Ideas: Qui, Que and Connectors)
  • Eliding qui: l'ami qu'arrive. Only que elides; write l'ami qui arrive. (Linking Ideas: Qui, Que and Connectors)
  • Starting an answer with car: Pourquoi ? — Car il pleut. Use parce que: Parce qu'il pleut. (Linking Ideas: Qui, Que and Connectors)
  • Using en effet to mean actually when correcting: En effet, je n'aime pas ça. That is en fait. (Linking Ideas: Qui, Que and Connectors)
  • Using tu with an adult stranger, a server or a customer at your part-time job: Tu peux m'aider ? Use Pouvez-vous m'aider ? or Pourriez-vous m'aider ? (Politeness and Register: Tu, Vous and Je voudrais)
  • Ordering with je veux: Je veux une pizza. In a restaurant say Je voudrais une pizza, s'il vous plaît. (Politeness and Register: Tu, Vous and Je voudrais)
  • Answering merci with a word-for-word Vous êtes bienvenu, which means you are welcome to come. Say De rien or Je vous en prie (or, in Québec, simply Bienvenue !). (Politeness and Register: Tu, Vous and Je voudrais)
  • Mixing registers in one message: Bonjour Madame, tu peux me dire... Once you choose vous, keep vous, votre and s'il vous plaît throughout. (Politeness and Register: Tu, Vous and Je voudrais)
  • Making the adjective plural with a polite singular vous: Vous êtes gentils, madame. One woman → Vous êtes gentille, madame. (Politeness and Register: Tu, Vous and Je voudrais)
