Unit 6 · Lesson 1 of 2

The SPH3U Formula Sheet, Decoded

Every formula you are given, grouped by strand, with what each symbol means, what unit it carries, and the one situation the equation is for.

You are handed this sheet in every test and on the exam. Having it is not the same as being able to use it — the sheet gives you the equations and tells you nothing about what the symbols mean, which units they need, or when each one applies. This page fills in the missing half.

Read the sheet before the exam, not during it
The sheet is a memory aid, not a substitute for knowing the material. Students who meet it cold lose time hunting for the right line. Spend twenty minutes with this page the night before and you will know where everything sits.

Kinematics

FormulaFindsSymbols and unitsWatch out for
Change in velocity in m/sAlways final minus initial
Displacement in mDisplacement, not distance — direction required
Time interval in sConvert minutes and hours first
Average velocitym/sWith distance instead, it gives average speed
AccelerationSign shows direction, not speeding up or slowing down
Final velocitym/sThe equation missing displacement
DisplacementmMissing final velocity. Square first
DisplacementmMissing initial velocity. Note the minus sign
Final velocitym/sMissing time. Remember the square root at the end
All four kinematic equations require uniform acceleration. Taught in Kinematics.

Forces

FormulaFindsSymbols and unitsWatch out for
Weight in kg, in NMass in kilograms, never grams
Gravitational constantTwo equivalent formsUse 9.81, not 9.8 and not 10
Net forceNDeclare a positive direction before adding
Acceleration or net forceN, kg, It takes the net force, not any single force
Coefficient of frictionUnitlessA ratio, so no units. On level ground
Taught in Forces.

Energy

FormulaFindsSymbols and unitsWatch out for
WorkJ is between force and displacement. Degrees mode
Net workJFriction contributes negative work
Kinetic energyJ, kg, m/sSquare first. Never negative
Gravitational PEJ is vertical height above a stated reference
Heat for a temperature changeJ, kg, \text{J/{(kg}\cdot^\circ\text{C)}} differs for ice, water and steam
Final temperature of a mixtureJWrite both as final minus initial
Heat to melt or freezeJ, kg, J/kgNo — the temperature does not change
Heat to boil or condenseJ, kg, J/kg is about seven times for water
Amount remaining after decayAny consistent unit and in the same time unit
Taught in Energy and Society.

Waves and Sound

FormulaFindsSymbols and unitsWatch out for
FrequencyHz, sFrequency and period are reciprocals
Wave speedm/s, Hz, mApplies to every wave. The medium sets
m/sSpeed of sound in air in Celsius, not kelvin. Air only
Mach numberUnitlessCompare with the local speed of sound
Echo time or distances, m, m/sThe factor of 2 — it is a round trip
Beat frequencyHzAbsolute value hides which note is higher
, Intensity at a new distance, mThe radii swap sides. Further away must mean quieter
Decibel differencedB is ten times the intensity
, Strings and open pipesm, HzAll harmonics present
, Closed pipesm, HzOdd harmonics only
Taught in Waves and Sound.

Electricity and Magnetism

FormulaFindsSymbols and unitsWatch out for
CurrentA, C, sTime in seconds
Resistance, V, ARearranges to and
Electrical powerW, V, AAlso for line losses
Total series resistanceTotal exceeds any single resistor
Total parallel resistanceTake the reciprocal at the end
, , Electromagnet strengthProportional onlyQualitative — no numerical field strengths
Transformer ratiosTurns, V, AThe current ratio is inverted
Taught in Electricity and Magnetism.

Quantities the sheet uses but never defines

SymbolNameTypical value or note
Specific heat capacityWater 4180, ice 2100, steam 2010, aluminium 900, iron 450 \text{J/{(kg}\cdot^\circ\text{C)}}
Latent heat of fusionWater:
Latent heat of vaporizationWater:
Half-lifeA time, specific to each isotope
Core material factorSoft iron can be in the hundreds
Turns, or harmonic numberMeaning depends on the equation it appears in
Period, or temperatureSeconds in wave equations, in thermal ones
Two symbols that mean different things on the same sheet
is a period in the wave section and a temperature in the thermal and sound-speed sections. is a harmonic number in the standing-wave equations and a number of turns for electromagnets. Read them from the context of the equation they appear in, not from the letter alone.

Required formulas that are NOT on the sheet

Memorize these four
The sheet is incomplete, and these four are examinable. Power: . Efficiency: . Average-velocity kinematics: , the one missing acceleration. Total mechanical energy: , and its conserved form .
  • Unit conversions — km/h to m/s is a division by ; minutes and hours to seconds; grams to kilograms.
  • Right-angled vector addition — and , from MCR3U rather than the physics sheet.
  • Energy cost — , and .
  • Percent error — needed in every lab report.
Unit traps worth a final read
appears as both and — same number, different reading. must be in Celsius for the speed of sound. and must share a unit in the half-life equation. Mass is in kilograms everywhere. And , Mach number and efficiency ratios are all unitless.

Where marks get lost

  • Meeting the formula sheet for the first time during the test, and losing minutes hunting for the right line.
  • Assuming everything needed is printed on it. Power, efficiency and the average-velocity equation are not.
  • Reading as temperature in a wave question or as period in a thermal one. Context decides.
  • Forgetting that in the parallel formula still needs inverting to give .
  • Substituting into and forgetting the square root, or into and forgetting to square.
  • Copying . The current ratio on the sheet is inverted.
