Unit 2 · Lesson 4 of 5

Describing Where Things Are

Key things to remember

  1. 1Single-word prepositions go straight before the noun: sur (on), sous (under), dans (in), devant (in front of), derrière (behind), entre … et (between), contre (against).
  2. 2Prepositions ending in de — à côté de, en face de, près de, loin de, au-dessus de, à gauche de, à droite de — contract: de + le = du, de + les = des.
  3. 3Il y a = there is and there are. Negative: il n'y a pas de + noun (il n'y a pas de télé).
  4. 4devant / derrière describe place; avant / après describe time.
  5. 5Set phrases: par terre (on the floor), sur l'étagère (on the shelf), contre le mur (against the wall).

Think of how often you say where something is: your phone is on the desk, the gym is across from the library, there's a café near the school. Describing a room, giving directions in a building or helping someone find a lost object all depend on small words called prepositions of place. French has two kinds. Some are a single word, like sur (on) and sous (under), and go straight in front of the noun. Others end in de, like à côté de (next to), and that de combines with le and les exactly as you learned in Unit 1: à côté du lit, not à côté de le lit. Add the expression il y a (there is, there are), and you can describe any space in detail.

PrepositionMeaningExampleEnglish
suronLe livre est sur la table. The book is on the table.
sousunderLe ballon est sous le lit.The ball is under the bed.
dansin, insideLes vêtements sont dans l'armoire. The clothes are in the wardrobe.
devantin front ofLa chaise est devant le bureau. The chair is in front of the desk.
derrièrebehindLe chat est derrière la chaise. The cat is behind the chair.
entre … et …between … and …Le sac est entre le lit et le bureau. The bag is between the bed and the desk.
contreagainstLe lit est contre le mur.The bed is against the wall.
These prepositions go directly before the article and noun, with no de. Sur and sous look alike: remember un sous-marin, a submarine, the boat that goes under the water.
Preposition with deMeaningExampleEnglish
à côté denext to, besideLa lampe est à côté du lit.The lamp is next to the bed.
en face deacross from, facingLa bibliothèque est en face du gymnase. The library is across from the gym.
près denearJ'habite près de la plage.I live near the beach.
loin defar fromL'aréna est loin de l'école. The arena is far from the school.
au-dessus deaboveL'affiche est au-dessus du lit.The poster is above the bed.
à gauche de / à droite deto the left of / to the right ofLa porte est à droite des fenêtres. The door is to the right of the windows.
The de in these prepositions follows the usual rules: de + le = du, de + les = des, while de la and de l' stay as they are.
Watch the de: du, de la, de l', des
Pick the article the noun normally takes, then join it to de: le lit → à côté du lit; la fenêtre → près de la fenêtre; l'école → loin de l'école; les magasins → en face des magasins. De le and de les are never written. If no noun follows, drop the de completely: La cuisine est à côté. (The kitchen is next door.) L'école est loin. (The school is far.)

Set expressions to learn whole
Some useful phrases do not translate word for word. par terre = on the floor (Mon sac est par terre). sur l'étagère = on the shelf. contre le mur = against the wall. au mur = on the wall, for something hanging there (Il y a une affiche au mur). ici = here, là or là-bas = there, over there.

Il y a: there is, there are

UseFrenchEnglish
Statement (singular)Il y a un lit dans ma chambre. There is a bed in my room.
Statement (plural)Il y a des livres sur l'étagère.There are books on the shelf.
NegativeIl n'y a pas de télé dans ma chambre. There is no TV in my room.
Yes/no questionEst-ce qu'il y a une piscine près d'ici ?Is there a pool near here?
Open questionQu'est-ce qu'il y a sous le lit ?What is under the bed?
Il y a never changes for a plural: there is and there are are both il y a. In the negative, un, une and des become de (d' before a vowel), as with every negation: il n'y a pas d'armoire.
APlace: where something is
  • devant — in front of: devant l'école
  • derrière — behind: derrière la maison
  • Le parc est devant la bibliothèque. — The park is in front of the library.
BTime: when something happens
  • avant — before: avant le cours
  • après — after: après le souper
  • Je mange avant le match. — I eat before the game.
In context: finding your way around a school
Bienvenue à l'école secondaire Champlain ! En entrant, la cafétéria est à gauche et le gymnase est à droite. La bibliothèque est en face du gymnase. Entre la bibliothèque et la cafétéria, il y a un petit jardin. Les casiers sont au deuxième étage, près de l'escalier. Le stationnement est derrière l'école.

Translation: Welcome to Champlain High School! As you come in, the cafeteria is on the left and the gym is on the right. The library is across from the gym. Between the library and the cafeteria, there is a small garden. The lockers are on the second floor, near the stairs. The parking lot is behind the school. Notice en face du gymnase (de + le), and à gauche / à droite used on their own, with no de, because no noun follows. Le stationnement is the Canadian word for a parking lot.

  • In context: where are my keys?
  • Maman : Super ! Et ton téléphone, il est où ?
  • Maxime : Il est dans ma poche !

Translation: Maxime: Mom, where are my keys? — Mom: Aren't they on the table? — Maxime: No, there are no keys on the table. — Mom: Look in your backpack. It's on the floor, next to the door. — Maxime: There are only my books in my bag. — Mom: And under the couch? Or behind the TV? — Maxime: Ah, there they are! They're on the shelf, between the radio and the lamp. — Mom: Great! And your phone, where is it? — Maxime: It's in my pocket! Notice à côté de la porte: porte is feminine, so de la stays separate. Il est où ? is a relaxed, spoken way to ask Où est-il ?
